1. Social dominance theory examines group dynamics in different communities and explains how dominant groups suppress subordinate groups politically, economically, socially, and culturally. Pratto and Stewart introduce the idea of “legitimizing myths.” Legitimizing myths are ideas created and spread by society; they are taken for granted because they are framed as obvious. Often these myths are hierarchy-enhancing as they reinforce the power of a dominant group by increasing social inequality. Legitimizing myths dictate how “people understand what they deserve and how they and others should be treated” (Pratto and Steward 2).(61)
2. The genre of source reference that Pham is using is a mixture of paraphrasing and quotes.
3. This exemplifies method in BEAM as the author is applying another source's ideas to the issue that she is talking about.

Manufacturers relate female ownership of the VW Beetle to its physical appeal; changing the Beetle's appearance means changing its consumer base. Similarly, females may choose the cruiser because it appears girly and cute" (63).

2) Quote

3) This passage uses a background source from BEAM Thinking because the quote "more power, less flower" is not cited in the sentence but is recognized by the reader since it is more common knowledge that companies use slogans such as that to sell or market their product to consumers. The author also mentioned that this was from Volkswagen which the majority of people know is a car brand so they can easily deduce that the quote used was an slogan for an advertisement, thus making it a background source.
