It serves as an avenue to express the Filipino's penchant for wit. Other times it also functions as a commentary for current events under the guise of humor. From Pop Culture references around the world, to allusions about our daily lives, the Filipino Meme culture is a bustling hub of expression and creativity amidst the Social Media landscape.

Since time immemorial, humanity always had a tendency to express meaning through various and innovative ways. It's like we have this tendency to speak to others without explicitly saying the words we have in mind. Instead, these ideas take on unique forms of which we can see if we look hard enough. We can see it in the paintings: of Juan Luna's Spoliarium which painfully depicts a struggle for independence in time of Spanish rule. We hear it in songs; how back then they'd expressed disdain towards mainstream, idealism, and corporate mass culture through the rough sounds of punk music. Often times we discretely express certain ideas because these ideas are frowned upon by society. And yet, ironically, it is through these suppressions that allowed humanity to express ideas in spite of these restrictions. In the modern age, alongside the music and art, a digital form of expressing ideas and sharing culture has come in the form of memes. Through wit, humor, and references, a sense of community in the digital age was formed.

Carnival Theory posits that humanity always has a need to express itself even through forbidden means. I'd argue that the aspect of immorality adds to the value of enjoyment of sharing these ideas and expressions. It's the thrill of just barely walking a thin line. It is essentially provides a relief for the pent up feelings and emotions we have while making it presentable. It is a manifestation of human creativity amidst the censorships or discouragement from voicing ideas other people disagree with. Not only does it create a space unique to a specific subculture in the internet, it also provides a sense of community to those who share the same values and ideals.
