My personal experience of activism is through art. I have been creating artwork since I was a student, and it has always been an important part of my life.In recent years, I have started to use my art to express my views in a more direct way. I have created works that draw attention to issues such as climate change, racism, and sexism. I always make sure to include a message in my work that encourages people to take action on the issues I am highlighting.

I have found that my artwork has allowed me to reach people who I would not have been able to reach otherwise. Art is a powerful form of communication, and it can reach people in a way that words cannot. My artwork has allowed me to make a difference in my community and to help create a more just and equitable world.

Overall, my experience of activism through art has been incredibly rewarding. It has provided me with an outlet to express my views and to use them to make a positive change in the world. I am proud to use my art to contribute to the fight for social justice and to help create a more equitable society. It has also made me more aware of the power of art and branding in spreading important messages and creating.

Tania Bruguera and Her Immersive/Interactive Art

What themes is she trying to discuss and through what methods?

One of Bruguera's main topics is the detailed workings of power and the complicated connection between the person and the government.

Bruguera uses a range of methods to involve her audience. She adeptly muddles the lines between artist and observer, motivating participants to become co-creators of the artwork.

How can this type of art impact the audience?

The effect of this art on viewers is significant. Bruguera's interactive and immersive installations establish a space that cultivates empathy, critical analysis, and discussion. They oblige audiences to face difficult realities, re-evaluate their convictions, and grapple with complex social problems. Bruguera's art could instigate enduring change by encouraging social transformation and promoting a more comprehensive and sympathetic society.

What are your reactions to these pieces of art and how do they make you feel?

Personally, I think Bruguera's art is really touching and thought-provoking. She can create experiences that break societal rules and really engage me. It's inspiring and makes me think about where I fit into society and the power of working together.

Tate (2009). ‘Tatlin’s Whisper #5’, Tania Bruguera, 2008 | Tate.
Critical Thinking Questions about Guerrilla Girls

Why do you think the Guerrilla Girls remain anonymous?

This careful selection ensures that their art is the main attraction and that the focus stays on the subjects they are discussing rather than their personal identities. They establish a shared identity that goes beyond individual recognition by adopting nicknames and sporting gorilla masks, underscoring the significance of the content over its messenger. This anonymity protects them from possible negative consequences in an industry that might not be open to change.

Why do you think the public response to the Guerrilla Girls’ form of art activism is positive?

The response from the public towards the Guerrilla Girls' art activism has been hugely positive for various reasons. To begin with, their employment of striking visuals, amusing catchphrases, and cunning guerrilla tactics seize attention and stimulate interest. With humor and mockery, they efficiently get a broad audience involved, simplifying intricate problems and making them more relatable. Furthermore, their work connects with people who have faced or observed gender discrimination, giving a chance to share experiences and empower each other. The Guerrilla Girls' art activism encourages others to challenge the current situation and demand more inclusivity and equality in the art industry.

How do you think the art world should respond to the alarming statistics the Guerrilla Girls have exposed?

The art world needs to act quickly and decisively to tackle gender bias. Firstly, galleries and institutions must recognize these inequalities and pledge to establish a fairer setting. In addition, diversity and inclusivity need to be a top priority when making decisions, ensuring that voices from overlooked communities are heard and valued. Moreover, partnership and assistance are vital. Artists, curators, collectors, and critics should actively participate in the Guerrilla Girls' work and spread their message. Let's stand together in solidarity and amplify their cause. The art community can unite and push for change by joining forces to demand accountability and progress.

Tate (2016).
<var>Library Induction</var>
In this Friday's class, we met with Hal and Nick again, Nick introduced us to the UCA library system again, such as how to find the appropriate e-books and journals according to our needs, how to search the articles and academic data of our major, and also taught us how to make the bibliography in the essay. I think this is very useful for my future academic career.

When I first came into contact with these,I didn't understand them very well. However, after I finished the first sustainability project, I got a better understanding of how to use the library system to do research and bibliography when writing an essay.

Learning again gave me a different experience. I find that learning after a certain practice will definitely have a new and deeper understanding.

<var>Academic Integrity</var>
The other very important part is about academic integrity, which is what we students need to know, sometimes we may unconsciously break the rules, such as using AI to help with homework, using translation software to pass exams, etc.

I think I need to pay special attention to this and absolutely prevent it in the future study.

"According to calculations made by Soviet and foreign experts, in the past 5.550 years there have been more than 14.500 small and big wars in which over 3.600 million people were killed. The amount of values destroyed in them would suffice to provide the present-day world's population with everyday necessities for several thousand years" (Tabunov, 1986).

"The Art of War: Computations made on an electronic computer by a former president of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences, aided by historians from England, Egypt, Germany, and India, have produced some astounding figures on the frequency and severity of wars. Included in these findings is the fact that since 3600 B.C. the world has known only 292 years of peace. During this period there have been 14,531 wars, large and small, in which 3,640,000,000 people were killed. The value of the destruction inflicted would pay for a golden belt around the earth 156 kilometers in width and ten meters thick. Since 650 B.C. there have been 1,656 arms races, only sixteen of which have not ended in war. The remainder have ended in economic collapse" (RAND Internal Publ., 1961).

"From the year 1496 B.C. to 1861 A.D., in 3,358 years, there were 227 years of peace and 3,130 years of war, or thirteen years of war to every year of peace" (Novicow, 1912).

All Quiet on the Western Front (German: Im Westen nichts Neues)

The novel describes the fate, experiences, and sufferings of a group of young students who volunteer to fight in the war.One of the main themes of the novel is the difficulty of former soldiers trying to return to civilian life after experiencing extreme combat situations.

Among them, body language and voice are more important, which I think can affect the audience the most.

For example, using gestures and facial expressions can convey important information and reduce tension; The voice is also the most able to mobilize the audience's emotions and attention, as we don't need to memorize the speech draft, only need to remember and practice the key words, and we should speak at a moderate speed, one minute say 150 words is more appropriate.

Learning these presentation skills after once speech experience will help me reflect and make progress better. I believe I can do better in the next presentation.
