Hi Kathleen,

I know others will read this, but I don't know who else to address on here but you. Thank you for being welcoming and honest, and I feel lucky that I got to be your office neighbor--you and Nina Floro ALWAYS had students in your office, ALWAYS working on their writing. I was lucky to catch you all during a break to say hello. I wish I had checked in more, as I often wonder about how faculty and staff survive institutions and really make a home out of these spaces.

Thank you, also, for supporting me when I lost a parent. I remember you wishing me well and holding space, even during a brief moment on Zoom during our first digital division meeting.

We are at a huge loss with your absence. Wishing you and your family so much peace.

Janice Sapigao

I wish we had been able to give you the proper recognition for what an invaluable part of our lives you were. You were such a hard-working, essential part of our Language Arts & Skyline familia. I don't think we fully appreciated the scope of how much work you did. You truly earned your moniker. You were also an amazing writer. I always thought Samba Dreamers should be made into a movie.

I miss you, my friend. Even though I can't really reach out to you any more, there is a presence you brought-- your wry, at times sardonic, sense of humor, your empathy, your kind words, your reality checks--that will reverberate through all the people you touched. We had plans to hang out and something always came up because we were "too busy." You have left me with such a hard-learned lesson, amiga... don't wait to show your love to the people you care about. Make the time to see them. You were decent, compassionate, wickedly funny, and most of all, just a good person. I will miss you dearly.

I can't remember where or how we met, but I do remember it was before you were full-time at Skyline. I got my full-time job in 1999, and a few years later I remember sitting in my backyard as we 'practiced' the interview process, over and over again. Viola! You became a colleague, a good friend, my sushi partner and 'dish' buddy. I remember your last words to me...in March of this year, a few days before we closed down. You popped your head in my office door and said..."when we get back, and at the end of the semester, we need a sushi run." I concurred. Then we were gone, and now you're gone. Gone way too soon.

Don't know what happens when people die, can't seem to grasp it as hard as I try - Jackson Browne. I think of you now as a Mitama, a spirit, free from earthly pain and suffering. That makes me happy.

Rosie Bell

During a very conflicting time in my life, when I felt lost and thought about dropping out of Skyline College (during my years as a student) Professor Feinblum reached out to me one day and asked me: "Have you ever thought about majoring in English?" This was the first time someone had approached me in such a direct way, and this small gesture, along with her constant support inside and outside of the classroom, finally gave me the courage to transfer over to SF State and pursue my Degree in English Literature. Years later, I was very grateful to find a position Inside of Skyline college, and have started to build a small collection of books at home--all thanks to Professor Feinblum.

Thank you for the inspiration and support.
--Saul Milan

I will miss you, Kathleen. I will miss your fine mind, your wry wit and grounded perspective on our daily work lives. I will miss asking you, as I did every semester, what you were writing and reading and what you assigned your students to read. We met in 2001. My respect and affection for you grew steadily. It deepened, not simply because of your intelligence and strengths. I saw how consistent you were in all interactions large and small. You were fully present for each of us, despite the fullness of your purposeful life. You were genuine and kind.
I will miss our conversations during commencement ceremonies as we sat side by side. In those quiet, capsule conversations we shared family events, travel news, small dreams.
Thank you for teaching countless students, including my niece. Without ever asking, students shared that you taught them how to think more clearly and to write with their own voice. They are more informed, capable and confident because you shared your amazing talents with them.

Imelda

**I wrote this letter to Kathleen a few days before she passed and dropped it off at her home.

Dear Kathleen,

Several weeks ago, I ordered your book, Samba Dreamers, from Amazon (it was through a third party—a used bookstore, I promise!).

I wanted to read something of yours. I’ve heard you read your poetry aloud, but I wanted to read your novel. I don’t know if you know but my whole life I’ve been obsessed with Hollywood. Especially classic Hollywood, movie stars, black and white films, technicolor musicals. Maybe it's because I was a creative gay kid, or maybe living in the shadow of LA. I was once crowned the youngest Champion of the Silver Screen Edition of Trivial Pursuit (in my little suburb of San Diego our local theater group had a fund-raiser Trivial Pursuit Championship).

Most of my writing, at least the serious writing, has been about film, about Hollywood, and especially about the people on the fringes and margins of Hollywood. The people who dream about getting there but never do, or it’s not what they expected when they do get there. The people behind the scenes.

My long in progress novel is about a John Wayne film being shot in the Utah desert in the 1950s. So not technically in Hollywood but it’s about movies and Hollywood people. About the native American tribe, the Shivwits, who become extras in the film. About the townspeople—St. George, Utah—who are swept up in the glamour, the excitement, the illusion of Hollywood. One of these days I’ll finish it.

Anyway, I write this to tell you I finished your book. I loved it. I loved Jose and his journey. I love that he drove a Hollywood tour bus—I have taken many of those! And Rosea… she frustrated, devastated, and ultimately moved me so much! I didn’t want the book to end. I know it’s a cliché thing to say but it’s true. Your book was a wonderful, beautiful, lively, smart, sad, funny, strange, nostalgic, escape for this boy (ok, I guess I’m a man now) who has spent his whole life in love with anything Hollywood, anything classic cinema, anything movies.

I wish I had talked to you about movies, about Hollywood, about Carmen Miranda and Ricky Ricardo (as a young boy, I used to have a crush on Ricky Ricardo! Hmm, that probably explains why I have rarely dated white guys).

I could have spent hours with you talking about these things. But I didn’t. I’m so sorry about that.

But I’m happy to know that I have this connection with you. I hope you don’t mind me saying that. But after reading your book, I feel connected to you. I feel I know you more. And I hope, with this letter, that you have come to know who I am, just a little more.

While reading your book I wrote notes in it, wrote in the margins, underlined passages—I know it’s wrong to write in books but I don’t care! There is so much in it that I wanted to remember, to go back to.

This one, in particular:

I love you like the hills, like the gold arm bangles of Yemanjá, like floating lighted candles in the water.

I know that only someone who has known love like this, and been loved like this, could write a sentence like this.

Thank you, Kathleen. For making me smile. For giving me such a gift in your storytelling.

With admiration,

Rob (Williams)
