TRUMP - Rhetorical analysis

Rhetorical pentagram: (introduction) :-)

Speaker: politician trying to explain political values, goals and he is trying to convince the audience to vote for him. The audience here are probably already fans of him (secondary audience, non-political): so by putting himself on their level in terms of language (colloquial, simple, as will be analysed) he will inspire them to work for him (intention). Also perhaps important is the fact that it takes place in the Trump Tower on Manhattan, as a typical symbol of his wealth and strength.

Forms of appeal

Pathos: “Our country is in serious trouble. (...) They kill us. I beat China all the time. All the time.”

National pride

Tropes and Schemes

Rhetorical question: “How are they going to beat ISIS?”

Repetitions in words or sounds (with an antithesis):

“they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime.”

Many claims, but no grounds: “They’re rapists”

Three-part lists: build up towards a climax: “Well, I got it for two reasons. Number one, we’re really good. Number two, we had a really good plan. And I’ll add in the third, we had a great financial statement. “

Anaphora:

I will find - (s. 4 l. 19-20), I will stop - (s. 4, l. 22), I will immediately terminate - (s. 4, l. 26)

Choice of words

Exaggeration:

“They kill us. I beat China all the time. All the time.”

“I would build a great wall, and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me, and I’ll build them very inexpensively, I will build a great, great wall on our southern border. And I will have Mexico pay for that wall.”

“Nobody would be tougher on ISIS than Donald Trump. Nobody.”

Negative words

Killing (s. 1, l. 17)

Not

Problems

(Us has become) a dumping ground (s. 1, l. 18)

(but) when talking about himself:

“I’ve done an amazing job” (s. 2, l. 5)

“I think that number one, I am a nice person.
