When I took my photos for the 3D form I thought about something simple and that would showcase my collage clearly. As that did not go as I expected at all I had to come up with a solution. Something that I remembered was Carlos's "Pick One", so I came up with the trash bin.

The process was a nightmare for me, as I am not used to this process. I reckon my original idea was ok, but poorly executed. Maybe because of the tools we had at our disposal or because I struggled using them.

I am happy with the final result, as it works like a glue to the whole project and because I had to think outside the box to complete the task. Also I should work on handling my emotions better during the process of tasks like this one.

My perception of type changed because I can see now the many possibilities available after drawing at a bigger scale, as there is much more room to details (serifs).

When hand drawing letters it is essential to create the block letters (5x4 and 5x5), so they are an unit (as the x-height).

With 25 boxes we can create any letter we want, the 2D to 3D, in this case is much easier than the previous 2D to 3D task we did last week.
Letters are much simpler because of their shape, especially sans serif.

The texts found on the cemetery were either Serif or Sans Serif and what I thought most interesting about them is that they fit they grave styles or not, this shows how important the typefaces are and how they can mess up the whole work.

The typefaces found on the cemetery were mostly colored silver or golden, on the other hand the ones we previously worked are more colorful and complex (small details in its shape and drawings), probably because of their different sizes (bigger than the cemetery ones).

From what I learn doing my research I am going to use Sans Serif in my 2D to 3D project as they work better for headlines such as my sentence —which I am still not sure about. I also considered using different materials, really basic ones but different from each other at the same time, everyday materials mostly —pencils, spoons, nail polishers.

The outcome of my object was better than I expected, as I struggled last week with with the 2D to 3D process I honestly thought the second try would be as frustrating. Thankfully I was wrong about this one. My material choice was perfect for my ideia, although I should worry a bit more about the polishing of my sculptures.

The final object does communicate my initial ideia (writing the sentence "I NEED A 3D PRINTER" in a sloppy fashion, so it would show how much we rely on technology), but in a totally different way: I wrote the word "Error" in a internet fashion and introduced the image of my sculpture to a common network failure (page not found), I also created a flyer so people can access my page in the exhibition through QR Code. In this case I went a little deeper than the initial idea, is showcasing a 3D sculpture in a 2D platform a good idea? Wouldn't it be easier to simply showcase the sculpture without giving people extra trouble? No and Yes. And that is exactly what my work portrays (hopefully) in this case: in an era the internet flourishes as the mainstream channel and as we rely so much in it for almost everything, aren't there reasons to keep doing certain things offline? Is it practical to use the internet for everything?

From now on I am going to change my approach to researches, in a way that I value less what the artist says about his work and more about my understanding of his work (initiate the 5 adjectives idea). Also I should focus less in an artist entire career, as there is a lot of ground to cover and shortage of time.

In my reflective journal (and project book) I must be keen in my process documentation. Highlighting my weakness and strength during the creative process in my project book with different colors. Keeping a schedule is something I should improve.

One thing from today that I must not drop is that argumentation backs ideas, so creating things and portraying the process behind them with confidence is key to be successful in this field of work.

Study Color Theory

I was going to create 5 graphic patterns and find/come up with 10 color palettes, which I still want to do, but first I am going through the basics of color in order to build a more solid foundation. I am also trying to complete my missions, it is a tough process as it takes time and effort, it is not going to happen in the blink of an eye. My feet are set on the ground.

Although I am really looking forward to Self-Publish week I need to focus on next week's project. Something I've been struggling with is the time I have been taking to write my researches, I get lost with the process: too much time scratching my head and day-dreaming or eventually I find something I like during the research and forget that I was supposed to be writing.

During the CMYK Black study in my project book I considered writing a digital project book next semester, printing the pages and making a sketchbook from scratch like we did a couple of weeks ago. But of course some experimentation with materials that can not be done in the computer are still gonna happen, I just feel I waste too much time gluing stuff and hand-writing, and, visually, the results are honestly sad, as I get frustrated with the process and just want to get it done.

Everything that could have gone wrong today happened, in the morning the rehearsal was an utterly mess, we lacked organization, rhythm and we did not take any notes of what we were playing that we actually liked, so it was pointless to rehearsal.

During the afternoon, with a headache, we were able to record a 60 seconds song. At a certain point I was done with the entire activity, so I decided to have a sip of water, in the meantime my bandmates were rotating instruments and when I came back mine was broken, that's unfortunate.

Very much like an electrocardiogram, that records the activity of the heart, I want to do my graphic score with precision, every element in the screen is going to represent an instrument and its rhythm. Maybe using things from the everyday, as something dropping to the ground, I can express sound with imagery.

At first I experimented with different shapes and ways to represent tones changing (different color tint, thickness and amount of objects). I was going to create a static graphic score, but in the end I wasn't happy with where my outcome was heading. That is why I decided to make an animation, in a software I have never used and I don't know if is going to work out at all, but I thought I might give it a try and force myself to learn something new.

I don't believe I contributed to the success of my team even though I tried. In the beginning of the rehearsal I suggested that we should take notes and organize the song in three parts (intro, chorus and the conclusion), unfortunately my bandmates were more worried about playing the instruments all the time, I also suggested that whatever we ended up creating and cherished should be kept and utilized in the final outcome if fitting, that went nowhere as well. The only suggestion I actually contributed was with us recording in the stairs. So I'm not happy with my contribution, I should've handled the situation with another approach which is unknown at this moment and time.

I really appreciate Ana's suggestion for my instrument: using ice to create sound and then (when it melts) use straws to create sound with the water (bubbling). So for the part 1 assessment I am going to record a performance with my instrument, dressed as a waiter (hopefully).

Time management is not only an issue for me but for FAD as well, yesterday we had little to do, today was a hurry. There are multiple days that people leave early because of that. The print room lecture was great, we were introduced to multiple ways of engraving, on the other hand I reckon the photoshop animation lecture was poorly timed, it isn't something students are going to use in this projects and if we wish to create an animation there isn't enough time to come up with something worthy, especially if you are new to this kind of software.

I wish I could have spent more time trying out the new engraving techniques, none of us was able to give it a try, so it was like half a lecture (which is understandable considering the amount of time we got). In the morning we learned about Lote 42 and book designing, which is something that at first may look plain and simple, but there is actually a sea of possibilities depending on the project. Out of the ordinary books were really inspiring, as they show crazy (in a logical way) problem solving skills, I wish I could do something like that with my zine, but I don't think it is going to happen with such short notice and my theme does not favor it.

Other than that my planning is going a bit slowly, tomorrow I know I am going to be good to go and I'll start planning the visuals of my zine, hopefully by Monday my dummie is ready and just a couple of adjustments are needed.

Silkscreen is going to be my medium, it enhances the project because then I'll have a high quality print in paper that I can't use for high quality digital print. I'm not on track because of last week's research and despite the amount of researches I am doing for this project, they are not in my padlet (Project Book). So I'll have to work hard over the weekend, which is a bit of a shame.

I have considered the retails price for the fair and I'm also going to make an online version of the zine, which will be cheaper and it's good in case I run out of real zines (I don't know yet how I am going to make the zine available online). I would very much like supporting pieces, although I don't think I will have enough time to come up with outcomes I am happy with (even for the zine maybe).

I do have a clear action plan for the production, what makes me uncomfortable is that my PDF file might not work for the film (this happened twice today). Keeping myself relaxed and focused when relying on somebody else is something I need to work on.

I going to stick to my initial plan when it coms to the binding and paper, keeping it simple but in a way that it harmonizes with the content of my zine. Although I wish I could explore the accordion format to create a wall in one of the sides, I feel like I am not exploring enough the format (zines). I also made my Zine available online, so that it can be a cheaper option and in case I run out of real ones (fingers crossed), also if I am being pessimistic in case I fail printing the zine in time.

Researching about Aleksandr Rodchenko, indigenous patterns symmetry and IKEA instruction manuals have helped me developing my zine visually. I didn't work on my project today, my photolith got ready at 4pm, tomorrow I am going to start printing, in the meantime I have been working on this week logo and a poster for my stand at the fair.

My budget has gone through the roof due to the price of a bigger silk screen and the photolith was also expensive, each zine is going to cost me R$12,25 if flawless. I am going to sell my zine for R$15 and the online for $1. If money wasn't an issue I would print my zine in leather and use real feathers. I thought I was late for this project, but after I talked to Marcelo I still have time for everything I need to do this week.

In the image below is the logo I did for this week: a combination of a pocket, a map pin and an earphone. Maybe I was too obvious with this one.

My worst day at EBAC so far, but I'm glad I could overcome it with what I believe to be a better idea. At first I was going to do my zine with silkscreen and it was going to be a regular zine with saddle stitches. As things didn't work out with my register and it was really time-consuming I decided to follow another direction: although I believe it is a shame I couldn't manage silkscreen I must keep trying and improving this skill (it was more of a stressful activity than a pleasurable one, this shouldn't be like it), so I am not giving up on this project with silkscreen just yet.

I was unhappy with my approach to this media, but this mess gave me an opportunity to go further with zines and what they have to offer, so tomorrow I am going to build a wall, with my zine. Despite today being my worst day at EBAC I am really proud of myself: how I overcame an extremely stressful situation, coming up with a better solution and how I handled my feelings. When I messed up the register (silkscreen) I felt like that was it for me and the fair, there wasn't enough time and I should just give up, thankfully 30 seconds later I decided against surrender, took a deep breath and that was it for today.

Almost everything worked out today, I just think that I should pay more attention to documenting the whole process, it definitely what I should improve in Part 2.

Today I gave it a try with a new dummie, what is worrying is that the dimensions of the cover and back rely on the quality of my folding, as I am not used to getting my hands dirty I'm afraid that it is going to be inconsistent .

I felt really sick this morning, what put me behind schedule for the crit and finish my zines folding. The quality of the print and paper is excellent but there were two things that didn't worked out today for me: first, when folding the zine the ink would get my finger dirty (so I had to be extra careful and use an eraser from time to time), secondly I consider this project to be a failure: my zines turned out to be really expensive and I couldn't make a lot of them due to time and budget, as far as I am concerned zines are supposed to spread information, unfortunately I couldn't do that. Next time I design a zine it is going to be way cheaper and I hope that I can reach a bigger audience and spread my beliefs, make more people reflect about it and make a bigger difference.

Today I was able to finish developing my three favorite ideas and finally choose one of them for this project, I also thought about materials that I could use for the Doctor Sleep project and, once again, my idea is almost impossible to be done. So tomorrow I am going to finish developing the "Gives You Hell" idea and hopefully begin sketching. Since I am going to do this project with digital printing, today showed how important the paper is when it comes to color fidelity.

If there isn't anything that can allow me to create the desired effect in the poster maybe I should try to come up with a material/ink/way to do so, or look for another idea. Perhaps mixing acrylic ink with water-based so they look the same with soft light but different with hard light.

I don't know if I am going to have enough time to do the amount of testing I would like to before the final pieces are printed, I have been really slow when it comes to drawing, even in the computer.

Also, today we had a look at Jared Muralt's sketchbook, it was quite inspiring (I like how he does the shading only using thin lines and varying the amount and direction. When it comes to the Doctor Sleep poster project I think it has come to an end and it is time to move on to a new project. If I fail to find the material to create the desire effect until next Tuesday I must let it go.

I reckon The Android still needs some polishing, especially when it comes to the brightness and clothing color.

I am still trying to figure out a way to test the final pieces, so far I have thought about making all the four illustrations look the same when printing home and then I will be able to print one of them in A4 with the fine art printer and the Hahnemuhle 240g that I am going to use for the final outcome (A2 size in this case).

Monique was extremely helpful today, it was a shame that my free sheets of paper didn't work out. In the end I bought five sheets of Canson, it was cheaper than the double sided tape I would have to by to use the paper I cut out (it was really messy and hard to work with), today wasn't the day to take any risks. Carlo's acetate suggestion was clever, but I might keep it for the Doctor Sleep project (yes, it is still going on).

Today we walked and took more notice of our surroundings, it was more about the journey that the place we were heading itself. It was an amazing experience for me, as a photographer I used to do this a lot in different highways, but with a car, it had been a long time since I last did it so I felt quite nostalgic about it, of course this time from another perspective.

Walking is definitely something I should do more, sometimes I wish I didn't live as close to EBAC as I do, so that I could take different paths as much as I could, seeing different things everyday is what I believe to be refreshing.

I am definitely not happy with today's outcome but it is what it is, 4 hours of hard work and little planning, this shows how important planning is.

Despite the lack of polishing it was an interesting experience to share a project with somebody else for the first time, although I am not sure if I got in his nerves as I was quite demanding, he is an incredible calm person and we were able to discuss the direction of the outcome throughout the production.

I am not going to work as much as I were from now on because it wasn't good for me mentally (it was also messing up with my sleeping schedule), so I need to focus on generating four ideas for the portfolio and figure out where/how to do them.

I am really worried about the amount of money I am spending for each project, which leaves me no room for silly mistakes. It might be a good idea to sum up how much each piece costs from now on (it is also good for future references and as a designer I must keep budget within my clients limits).

So far the three ideas I have for this project are really different, especially when it comes to where they would be displayed, the only one I am unsure of where is the Gender Equality, so if I take it to the streets swapping from English to Portuguese is the way to go.

Unfortunately I reckon my drawings skills are making me take too long, the challenge in the case below was to make clear that the elements were hands, although the nails really helped I am still not satisfied with the result, just feels off to me, I do enjoy how the typeface and the drawings match.

I feel that I am lacking the skills to make the name of the album look as if it truly belongs to the photo, using noise and gaussian blur feels cheap.

The background also bothers me a bit, since it is an old photo and we are talking about a gradient background, it was tough even with the clone stamp tool. Other than that I spent most of the day looking for vintage photographs that would dialogue with today's issue of sexism, especially against women.

Today was a really busy day, most of the album is finished, it still needs polishing and I am unsure if the illusion of the back is going to work (lots of testing are needed, on the other hand the resources lack). Visually wise I am really happy with this project's outcome, now I must find the printing method and materials that vinyl albums utilize.

The other portfolio projects are all still going to happen, some of them are just on hold, I decided to go for projects that are "easier" to do at first, so if things go wrong and there isn't enough time I am still going to deliver something. I am glad that I could apply the grid, I feel as if I use them in most projects without even knowing (I do play around a lot with equal spacing and geometrical shapes).

The arrows might need some rework, I can figure it out later after researching some references.

Today I went to Sé so I could find the santinhos to work with, it was a really uncomfortable experience for me, I am not used to that kind of place (I had been there once, when I was nine), I guess it was an eye-opening experience.

When I arrived home I did a pros and cons list so I could choose one of the two ideas I was carrying on. It wasn't as helpful as I expected, because some facts are more important than others, so I had to take the small details into consideration.
I ended up choosing the Fake News idea (people's response to it was extremely positive), I wish I could manage doing the two ideas at the same time, I am sure I will have to do something like this once I start working.

Last but not least, I must get back on silkscreen, I wish I could silk some t-shirts during the holidays. I also started developing a poster that dialogues with the perspective of my placard, it still needs a lot of work regarding the size of the letters and the kerning (I am going for only one color as well).

I reworked the the page orientation so the composition is better and the typography is not as small as before. The big issue today was the rain, if I put my stencil on the street right now it won't work, needless to say that the ink will come off.

I also tried to create a structure so the poster could always be readable and easy to stick to a surface, unfortunately that didn't work it, I could have used a paper to create the 90 degree angle that is required for this to work out, but that didn't come to my mind at that time.

I am not a big fan of this project so far, as I find it a bit misleading and I am not sure if I should create something from a book or the other way around. I didn't feel confident about any of my ideas today, as they sound pointless to me (not really talking about matters with precision).

The artist I liked the most today was Olafur Eliasson with the work "Your House", how ingenious it is and well finished. When it comes to the ideation techniques I find them quite useful, but I do struggle to develop plain ideas into something complex, perhaps I should explore other sources of idealization, such as news website and look for news that link with books.

The lack of research is really getting in the way of idea generation, however, based on today's presentation most groups displayed similar research sources, I think that the proposals are going to be too similar with what can be found in Vila Madalena more than trying to enhance the identity of the two peculiar (compared to the other, new, vegan, edgy business).

Other than that I feel out of sync with my partner since it has been quite hard to focus on generating different ideas, I reckon people are going towards the same direction with the proposals but with different approaches (for now at least).

I spent half of the day researching about themes (I care about) that match with gambling, the other half was generating ideas based on those themes. So far I reckon one of my ideas have potential, as it talks about a matter that I could see myself creating a piece about, I also think the funny and interactive approach to the decision making of politicians fits perfectly. Other than that this project is going to be an experiment for me, when it comes to the duration and speed of my decision making.

Maybe a game wasn't the right device to communicate the idea I had in mind, perhaps I should've sticked to am analogic device and work harder on my idea generation (this stage of the process is certainly the one that takes longer for me).

I decided to rework "The Collector" collage, from the feedback I got on crit I thought that would be better to explore that the straws are not the problem, there is much more to it, and who can make a difference are the kids who are learning how to behave when it comes to environmental issues and the way the handle garbage.

I took the rest of the day to think about which one of the three ideas I should take forward and how they would adapt to the pandemic. So, my solution would be to adapt idea 3 to my apartment and, if necessary, record a demonstration of how it works, since it would be interactive.

From what I've talked to Carlos on the tutorial I think that I should explore the trickster inside of me, not only waiting for the opportunity to arise but also seek to create these opportunities.

I finished my project proposition today and I realized that I was able to understand my project better when writing about it, I believe that I am now sure that I want to do idea 3. Something to do tomorrow is set up my action plan and perhaps make a custom template which I think is going to be necessary.

He also said that my target audience shouldn't just be people who can afford green energy, I also should look for ways of including people that can't afford green energy into the project, looking for ways of giving them the chance to go green. I am not sure I agree with his perspective because from my point of view it would make the project and the idea I want to communicate much less effective, as I am aiming for people at the exhibition (who can pay a tuition fee of R$4.000,00 per month).

The data I found today is a strong talking point to the project, I feel that I still need to look for more, specially related to the impact of non-renewable energy sources to the environment, I have the numbers to back me right now which is great, but I should look for ways to better use them when communicating my idea, I can't just put the numbers there. Once I am done with the logo and color palette I am going to start working on the infographics and gather more data.

First I have to know the space I am going to use for the infographics so the bike doesn't look out of scale, the architecture of the piece and use this as advantage when it comes to composition.

The project book is really helpful when gathering data, the research padlet made the process much slower and not as straight forward as my new approach. As of this afternoon I am facing an issue with the data I found, at first the kWh/capita was 275, now when simulating the amount of solar panels required the information that I have is that I would need 31 of them for a house with 4 people, the realistic amount would be 8 panels (345wp each), in total that would generate 552kWh per month, averaging 138 kWh/capita, not as close as the previous data I collected. The thing is the price and amount of panels varies in power, size and effectiveness, which makes 90% of the data I collected so far untrustworthy.

When it comes to the logo I am happy with my outcome, despite struggling to find the right contrast between blue and green, that being said I reckon revisiting color theory wouldn't be a bad idea. I am quite happy with the concept of the logo, how it feels unfinished as if there is still work to be done. Something that worries me is the thickness of the text and lines, when displaying the logo on different sizes I should do some adjustments.

If I ever want to do a headline inside a box again (and use it as a pattern) I have to make sure I use capitals only, if not the descenders and ascenders will make it look wrong.

2. If I want to place the infographics on the entirety of a wall I have to make sure that the bike is sufficiently far, so the text down below is within the cyclist field of view (if the angle is too sharp the text is going to be unreadable).

3. It would be a good idea to give the viewer decision making opportunities, such as choosing a path to follow when it comes to renewable energy, taking the person to another video.

4. Camera movement always to the right (pan) when portraying progress, because of the way Brazilians read (feels more natural, and progress should feel natural).

Other than that I thought a lot about the user experience and how this "solution" to the pandemic is not fitting to my target audience, I don't think is going to be a fluid experience for them (I should do some testing with known people who are my target audience, but there is not enough time to make changes if necessary). When it comes to my idea of using sound to create the animation (someone riding the bike and generating eletricity) I think that this concept is dead by now, I tried to replace the experience of riding a bike with the interactive non-linear videos but I reckon it was a shallow solution.

I finished uploading the videos to YouTube, now I have to work on the webpage, I feel that I work much better with a closer deadline, when there is too much time and too many tasks to complete I spend most of that time planning and feeling sorry for myself because I don't think I can do that amount of work within time. When the deadline is close there is no time to wonder, either I work or I don't deliver (I consider this to be a good kind of pressure).

At this moment of the project I think that I should have dived deeper into Research, let myself loose at first so I would find out information I didn't know I didn't know. It feels shallow for such a long project, my lack of interest was to blame for this deficiency.
