We expect that once accomplished these activities will produce the following evidence or service delivery:

Emotional Regulation: Coping strategies help individuals manage their emotions in healthier ways. Homeless individuals often face a range of stressors and traumas, and learning effective coping skills can reduce emotional distress and improve their ability to handle difficult situations.

Self-Awareness: Journaling allows individuals to reflect on their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. By promoting self-awareness, homeless individuals can gain insights into their mental health and make more informed decisions about seeking help and engaging in treatment.

Reduced Anxiety and Depression: Meditation and mindfulness practices have been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Incorporating these techniques into the program can help alleviate the psychological burden experienced by homeless individuals.

Increased Resilience: Developing coping strategies and engaging in journaling can enhance resilience. Resilience enables individuals to bounce back from adversity and may improve their ability to overcome challenges related to homelessness and mental health.

Empowerment: By teaching coping skills and encouraging journaling, the program empowers homeless individuals to take an active role in their mental health care. This empowerment can lead to increased motivation and engagement in treatment.

Stress Reduction: Homeless individuals often face chronic stress. Meditation and coping strategies can be effective in reducing stress levels, contributing to better overall mental and physical health outcomes.

Improved Communication: Journaling can help individuals express their thoughts and emotions, making it easier for mental health professionals to understand their needs and tailor interventions accordingly.

Enhanced Coping with Triggers: Coping strategies can assist individuals in managing triggers related to mental health issues and homelessness. As a result, they may experience fewer crises and feel more in control of their lives.

Long-term Stability: When coping skills and journaling become integrated into daily routines, they can contribute to the long-term stability of homeless individuals. This stability is essential for progress in other aspects of their lives, such as securing housing and employment.

Decreased Reliance on Maladaptive Coping Mechanisms: By providing healthier coping alternatives, the program can help homeless individuals reduce reliance on harmful coping mechanisms, such as substance abuse.

Preventative Aspect: Coping strategies, journaling, and meditation can also serve as preventive measures by equipping individuals with tools to address challenges proactively and reduce the risk of mental health crises.

The population we decided to focus on is the homeless and their access to mental health services. The homeless population is increasing and access to medical care, specifically mental health services, is not present in the community. Our Padlet is focused on ways we can offer mental health services through occupational therapy and develop a program that allows for the homeless to connect with quality occupational therapy for help. Through occupational therapy, we can provide not just ways to cope with mental health stressors, but we can find ways in meaningful occupations that can build life skills that aide in preventing mental health struggles.
