EXPLANATION: This quote signifies the effect Zeena and her brooding presence had on both Ethan and Mattie. It showed she was the single factor that was preventing them from being with  each other and expressing their true emotions for one another. 
The first part of the quotes is also ironic because it shows Mattie filling in Zeena’s “spot” as wife and caretaker of the household.

This quote is significant to the ending of chapter 5 because it shows how satisfactory the last evening alone with Mattie was. Ethan restrained all of his feelings that he wanted to show, knowing that their relationship would never be the same had he done what he wanted to. Throughout the chapter there are times in which Ethan would think one thing and say another. It did not help that every time he thought of Mattie, he couldn't get Zeena's face out of his head. 4: Its ironic how right after Ethan's mom passed away, Zeena becomes sick one year after marrying her. He is left to take care of someone once again.
