Murdered And Missing Indigenous Women

An article by Poetry Foundation speaks on the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women, which is a global issue. They touch on the story of Anna Marie Sewell and how she realizes there is a larger issue than we think on this topic. In North America, Anna's home country, the most recent data from the RCMP says that in the past 30 years there has been 1,017 aboriginal women murdered in Canada, with more than 174 missing. Indigenous women take about 25% of Canadian female homicide victims and 11% of missing female cases, but only representing 4.3% of the countries total female population. These numbers are three years old and potentially inaccurate. The Native Women Association Of Canada has done their own research and believes that closer to 4,000 women have disappeared or been killed. Highway 16 that goes east to west across British Columbia is named the "Highway Of Tears". An estimated 18 to 50 women most native and teenagers have vanished or been killed there since 1969. Along the mountain and woods there are faded photos of missing women and billboards warning native girls not to hitchhike. According to Poetry Foundation most of these cases go unsolved, "It's about speaking and honouring the women who have been taken through violence, through racism, through sexism. It's very much a ceremony of their resilience and their resistance, traveling from this realm, making their travel beyond the Milky Way and finding a place of peace and a place of rest." says Scofield. Action needs to be taken. A sign that says "warning no hitchhiking for native girls" is completely unrealistic. This is not a way of living and no one should have to feel scared or unsafe in their own community. Steps need to be taken and set in place to prevent Indigenous women from becoming a victim. Bringing awareness in my school is a way that I can help fight this indifference. May 5th is Missing Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Day, encouraging people to attend events dealing with this, is another way that people can use their voices on this topic.

Americas Willful Ignorance About Black Lives Deaths

James Baldwin appears on Boston Globe and says, "The reason black people are on the streets has to do with the lives they are forced to lead in this country, and they are forced to lead these lives by the indifference and the apathy and a certain kind of ignorance, a very willful ignorance, on the part of their co-citizens." Half a century later his words speak loud in America where thousands of protesters across dozens of cities take to the streets. The objectors realize America is a country where police officers knelt on a black mans neck until he died, knowing it would all be caught on camera, where a black runner got shot in a white neighbourhood, and when a black women got shot eight times in her own apartment by authorities, without a warrant and looking for someone who did not live there. These bad people go a long time without facing charges or consequences. In 1968, Baldwin said, "Everybody knows, no matter what they do not know, that they wouldn't like to be a black man in this country." Because of race, failing schools and poor social services have a heavy impact of black youth. Biased judges and juries don't make the most accurate desions and imprison people who are black because of their colouring. Un-equal health care causes black Americans a higher death rate then COVID-19. The most important part in these stories is that racial injustice in America is very bad and that something needs to be done to help it. This is no way to live and no one should have to be treated differently based on their colour of skin. Ways I might be able to raise awareness is to encourage others to celebrate that Black Lives Matter and show that everyone, know matter their skin colour, can join together to make a difference.

The platform Youth Without Shelter speaks on the global topic of youth homelessness in Toronto. There are 1,500 to 2,000 homeless children in Toronto. As we know, Toronto is one of the wealthiest cities in the world. Despite that they have the largest homeless population in Canada. Youth make up the fastest growing population of the homeless in Canada. Youth Without Shelter says their demand for cover is increasing, and fast. They say children needs are changing, requiring longer stays and needing deeper support, "The longer youth remain homeless, the greater the negative outcomes" remark YWS. Youth homelessness is a very indifferent subject. Young and older kids should not be on the streets. They should be in a safe and comforting home. When people think of the word "homeless" they think of drug addicts, or lazy people without jobs who have no intentions of getting one. While in some cases this may be true young children aren't capable of letting this happen to themselves. They may become homeless because of family issues, abuse, mental illnesses, or poverty. Children should always have a stable and reliable place to stay. People need to raise more awareness for this problem as it is important and impact many lives.

Deaths Of Seven First Nations Teenagers

Tanya Talaga is author of the book The Seven Fallen Feathers and a documentary film-maker. She revisits the death of the seven First Nations teenagers in Thunder Bay between 2000 to 2011. All of the children were in Thunder Bay for the same reason. They were separated from their families and friends just so they could get a high school education. Five of the seven kids, Jethro Anderson, Curran Strang, Reggie Bushie, Kyle Morrisseau and Jordan Wabasse were found in Thunder Bay rivers. Two students, Paul Panacheese and Robyn Harper were found in their boarding homes. Tanya says change is still a long way from First Nations people in Northern Ontario. In November, 2016 the office of the Independent Police Review Director investigated the Thunder Bay Police. They discovered systemic racism was used. They re-opened the case due to deficiencies in how the cases were handled. When Tanya asked Senator Murray Sinclair, who investigated the Thunder Bay Police Services Board, if he had any faith in the new multidisciplinary task force investigations he replied with, "No." This answered all of her questions, "The willingness to blame Indigenous victims in Thunder Bay was very common. I'd be surprised if it changed quickly. Im sure if they's say it changed but I'd be surprised if there was any significant change in that attitude" Sinclair says. In Thunder Bay, Indigenous Peoples are made out to be less than worthy victims and that their deaths are not worth an in-depth investigation. Tanya believes this isn't systematic racism at work but just plain racism. The equality of First Nations people has always been poor and there hasn't been much change to make things more fair. Bringing awareness to this issue is one way to fight the indifference surrounding systemic racism. Making people aware that this is still happening today by connecting that of MMIWG to this issue, is another way to show that systemic racism is not a thing that died with the seven children in Talaga's book.

Being In A Wheelchair Is No Reason For Being Held In Solitary

CCLA comments on Gregory Allen being placed in solitary confinement because of being in a wheelchair. He was held in confinement for 412 days because of his disability. "This was unethical, unlawful, and wrong in a number of ways." says CCLA. Gregory wrote a human rights complaint. Canadian Civil Liberties Association wanted to intervene and help so they could explain their serious concerns to the Tribunal. A person with a disability may have more needs that someone who doesn't. This was Allen's case. Gregory needed to have daily showers to protect his skin and was not capable of digesting foods properly. Healthcare is very poor in confinement and he did not have much acmes tot it. When humans rights received his complaint they argued saying they placed him in solitary in order to accommodate his disability. He was able to reach a settlement. This includes some protection for people with disabilities in Ontario's jails. We often don't think of people with wheelchairs or other disabilities in a jail. Yes, solitary confinement is for punishing but it is not meant to affect one's health. Moving forward the government needs to make sure that prisoners have better access to healthcare and that people with disabilities still get their daily needs if it is life threatening. To raise awareness for this topic we could make the government more known to what's happening in jails and suggest ways to make sure disadvantaged people can still function in a healthy manner.

Next Steps On How To Solve Indifference And How To Encourage People To Use Their Voices

We can solve indifference by using our voice to bring attention to others. When speaking out loud we can deliver important messages throughout social media, protests, events, and campaigns. It is important we make indifference known so it is not overlooked and we can raise awareness for it. We can collaborate with like-minded people to share ideas and get the ball rolling to stop this issue. We can encourage people to use their voices by connecting and understand what matters to them. Indifference is a very important subject and most people would like to hear and do something about it. To make a difference you can do it from anywhere. Even the comfort of your own couch. With social media you can share and connect with so many people that you have similar interests with. Making a difference does'nt mean you have to be a superhero. If more people understood this they would be more likely to use their voice and project their feelings.

Immigration By 2041

Statistics Canada predicts what Canada might look like in a 20 years. "In 2041, if trends continue, half of the Canadian population will be made up of immigrants and their Canadian- born children." The Canadian population would be 47.7 million and 25 million of them would be immigrants. That's 52.4% of Canadas population. In 2016, this population was 14.4 million and accounted for 40% of the total population. Several scenarios are reflecting the uncertainty of developing demographic amenities. This is an example of indifference because if Canada takes in to many immigrants it could result in a lot of homelessness, inflation, poverty, overpopulated, and un sanitary. If the population in Canada becomes to crowded no one see anything good coming from it, but only bad. People will start to get angry and protest. To raise awareness for this as a country we need to get the governments attention and tell them to slow down immigration.
