There needs to be more genuine appreciation for teachers and what they are going through - our teachers struggle with depression, anxiety, mental health and trying to balance family, work, and other commitments. Creating an atmosphere of trust, care, and appreciation is the most important aspect. Creating and cultivating culture within your building - if teaching is not enjoyable for the teachers, the students won't enjoy the learning. Do small things - thank you notes, literally asking teachers, "how are you?", ensure teachers know that their family health is important to you as the principal, etc...

I think something we can do to support struggling teachers is to do what we do for all teachers on a daily basis, but do it with more purpose and meaning for those struggling. When we observe the teachers are we doing it to simply to check off a box, or are we doing it and providing feedback? Are we discussing the good things, the bad, and offering suggestions on where to improve it? When we engage them on a normal basis, are we doing it out of obligation or are we doing it to get to know them better? Like we encourage our teachers to have meaningful relationships with their students, do we have those same relationships with our teachers?

The main thing I heard yesterday that we are not doing and would be a good idea is: Not give new teachers a duty the first year or first semester so they have time to: Absorb all of the new rules, get to know their students to make connections (helps in classroom management), and get to know their subject thoroughly.

I believe getting in new teachers classrooms early and often helps know they are supported. We need to have follow up meetings or conversations with them to discuss what worked or could use improvement. As the year goes on it is important to meet with them and let them ask questions.

I believe that ideas regarding intentional course assignments and scheduling are powerful in setting someone--a new teacher--up for success. Making sure new teachers also have a community beyond just a PLC is a great way to improve overall morale and retention as well.
