Ten years fighting in the Trojan War, and ten stranded out to sea. While at sea, he loses all his men on countless journeys, gets trapped on an island with Calypso for seven years (willingly and unwillingly), and has to fight numerous monsters on his way home. While away from home, hundreds of men or "suitors" try and marry his wife so they can be the king of Ithaca. It doesn't help that Poseidon is targeting Odysseus after killing his son, Polyphemus, the king of Cyclops, even though Polyphemus was trying to kill Odysseus and had eaten his men in the first place.

The motif I picked was selfishness. Selfishness was a big part in the Odyssey, because the Gods would punish them if the people weren't generous. Odysseus and his crew got held back a lot by their selfish actions, leading Odysseus to return after 20 years. The actions of the crew eventually led to them all dying, only leaving Odysseus left.

In the graphic novel, Odysseus gets a prophecy from Teriesias saying to watch out for the island with Helios's cows. He warned Odysseus to not let his crew eat the cows. Once they arrived at the island, Odysseus left his crew unsupervised and they had cooked the cows. This lead to the crew that was left to all drown, leading Odysseus on a treacherous journey, eventually leading him to be stuck on Calypso's island and having to go through many hard challenges.

The climax of "The Odyssey" is the peak moment of the story, the most action in the novel. The biggest event in the book. After Odysseus returns home, he casts a disguise to look like an old man. When it's finally time to reveal his true self, he waits for the right time. His wife, Penelope, makes a challenge for the suitors. If one of the men can string the bow, and make the arrow go through all of the axeheads, they can marry her. That's how Odysseus married her. So after everyone tried it and failed, Odysseus finally revealed himself by being able to string the bow and shoot it through the axe heads. After this, he confronts the suitors for trying to marry his wife and staying in his home. Then he kills them all.

The resolution of "The Odyssey" is different in both books. The graphic novel ends with Odysseus making peace with the others, being told not to fight by Athena and to keep the prophecy told by the man in the Hades named Teiresias. In the original text, it ends with Odysseus and Penelope being happy to see each other again, describing at the end that they were in sorrow because they had missed each other so much.

There are weaknesses in both the graphic novel and original text. The original text does not have the ability to show what is going on in the story, only explain. This might be a problem for people who can't understand a wider more complicated vocabulary. In the original text it says, " Indeed they would have gone on indulging their sorrow till rosy-fingered morn appeared, had not Minerva determined otherwise, and held night back in the far west, while she would not suffer Dawn to leave Oceanus, nor to yoke the two steeds Lampus and Phaethon that bear her onward to break the day upon mankind" (Homer, Excerpt 2). Some people might not know Minerva is, or Oceanus, or Lampus or Phaethon. In the graphic novel if it were to show this, it'd be much easier to understand because people could have a visual look at them instead of having to remember the name.

In the graphic novel, it has lots of pictures but not as many words. This is one of its weaknesses when it comes to explaining. If people like to read the words more than look at the pictures, the words aren't very descriptive because the pictures do most of the explaining anyway. It would help explain the situation more if they had more detailing in the writing, but then again it's a graphic novel so I don't blame it. The graphic novel shows Odysseus saying, "Now, Apollo guide my next shot!" (Homer 212). The next couple of panels are only drawings. There aren't any words, just pictures showing the arrow going through the axe heads.

The Odyssey has been a very influential book, having movies, graphic novels, and many other things made about it. It's been loved by many, passing on the theme to all of it's readers and viewers. It's very obvious that in the story, the people were punished because of their actions. This would be very crucial to pay attention to by the viewers, maybe even make them fear that if they don't do the same, they'll be punished too, no matter what they believe in.
