- From Scandinavia and traveled to Asia, Europe, and the North Atlantic
- Used advanced ships for the time that used sails or oars. The ships were also symmetrical from bow to stern which meant it was easy to turn around
- they traveled around by sea, destroying monasteries, and collecting all the loot they could get their hands on  
- the vikings started off by just looting monasteries by the sea but as their power grew, they started moving inland for more loot 
- the viking expeditions were important because they proved new mariner technologies while colonizing different parts of the world

- their prize was finding new islands to settle and expand their network of navigation 
- used outrigger canoes, which is two canoes connected to each other to increase stability
- relied on the stars to guide them and keep their bearings, as well as ocean currents and the wind
- used an instrument to measure the elevation of stars  in the sky
- created and passed on songs and stories to memorize all the information they needed
