Creative writing is a vast community. It has many genres, each holding differences and similarities to each other. Creative writing is pieces of work that tell a story of some kind, whether it be fiction or nonfiction, and within the creative writing community, poetry is incredibly important.

Poetry is defined by the Meriam Webster Dictionary as "Writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language chosen and arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm"

But poetry is very large community in it's own right with many different genres, such as Haikus, Limericks, and sonnets, that it's difficult to cover them all, so within this Padlet, I'll be taking focus on a specific type of poetry: The Villanelle.

The villanelle is a rigidly structured poem, but even so, it does share some moves used by other types of poetry:

Repetition: The repeating of phrases or sounds within the work.

As explained when defining the villanelle, repetition is a key part of their structure, as within the villanelle the first and third lines are repeated three times throughout the work. There is also repetition in its rhyme scheme through its pattern of ABA, ABA, ABA, ABA, ABA, ABAA.

Conceit: A metaphor that is used throughout a poem or within a large section of a poem.

Due to the nature of repetition within villanelles, their structure allows for a metaphor to be used continuously throughout the work, allowing it to be built upon by the author.

These two moves are common within Villnelles due to their repeating structures.

Poetry is distributed amongst its community in many different ways. Anywhere one can find written material, they can find a poem. Newspapers, magazines, websites, and books dedicated specifically to showcasing poetry, etc...

Due to the popularity of the internet, poetry, and villanelles by extension, are most likely nowadays to be found on websites dedicated specifically to them such as poets.org or classicalpoets.org. allowing groups of poets to come together, share, and comment on each other's work.

But other poets aren't the only audience for poetry, many of those outside the poetry community, who do not write poems, also use these resources to read poetry or teach it to others.

Villanelles, like most poetry, aren't bound to one subject, they can be about many different subjects such as romance, horror, and sci-fi. They can reflect on moments of real life or be completely fictional.

Language is also subject to variation within villanelles, they can be formal sounding, have slang, or use personal language. There is no set wording that villanelle must follow.

The only requirement for villanelles are that it follows the specified structure, but outside of those rules variation can come in many different forms
