Background Information

In 1587, John White led an expedition of 117 men, women, and children from England to establish a colony in the New World. His daughter and her new baby Virginia Dare were among the group. (Virginia Dare is the first English child born in the New World). They landed at Roanoke Island off the coast of North Carolina. They settled among different Indian tribes including the Powhatan and Croatoan. Their relationship with the natives in the area was sometimes good and other times strained.

The Roanoke Island colonists still relied on supplies from England and John White decided to make a trip back to there to resupply the group. He told them if they had any problems to leave the sign of a Maltese Cross as a signal of distress. Once he arrived in England, the King and Queen took back possession of the ship because they needed it in their war with Spain. It was three years later before John White was able to return to Roanoke Island with the supplies.

When John White arrived, the colony of Roanoke Island had disappeared without a trace other than one wooden post with the word “Croatoan” carved in it. The Maltese Cross, that was their signal for distress was also not present. He never found them or knew what happened to them. In his writings he speculated that they had moved the colony several miles inland.

No one ever knew what actually happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke, but there are several theories about it. •We know diseases were problems for colonists in the New World.
•Some years later people reported seeing Indian children in the area that had fair skin and blue eyes. There were also Indians with homes in the same style as those of the Roanoke Colony. There were also Native Americans who spoke English and dressed like Europeans.

John White, Virginia Dare was John Whites daughter. It took 3 years because the Queen of England needed the ship for the war with Spain. They were supposed to do the red cross if they ran into trouble. He thought they moved far far away. Because there were no signs of them left.

In my theory is that all of these are wrong if they did burn down it there would have to be left over burned wood and it has too smell like ash or smoke and they did not say any smell also some natives are nice and good so probably and possibly a chance for natives and the people that went missing teamed up for food and water

I believe that the colonist teamed up with the Natives. This is because there were no bones founded which would be found if they were dead. Also some of the Indian tribes had some of the English houses and the children had some fair skin and other English characteristic.

I thin that the colonists passed away because back then when the colonists were on land there was a lot of war in the past tense. Colonists did not last for a long time, most of them died because of war or diseases that happened in the past that can not happen here.

I think it's theory 2 because the storm or hurricane could've wiped out the island. For example with the weather they had a storm just like when john white arrived he had to leave so early because there was a storm and there was nothing to be found except the note carved on the tree.
