In 1869, the Whipple Home School was built in Ledyard, Connecticut teaching the deaf how to lip read and speak. The next location in Mystic was turned into a residential school where deaf students lived and attended school. The were originally taught lipreading and speaking, no usage of sign language.</div>]]></description>
