Symphonies are Innovating

Upon visiting different Symphony Orchestra's websites, their repertoire and 2017-2018 season events were not what I expected. I was anticipating on seeing popular names like Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, Mozart and other composers that have made great works of art. However, these composers were missing from most of the listings of different orchestras. Classical music isn't obsolete in these orchestras but certainly have decreased in frequency. Instead, some of the pieces being performed now include "Video Game Soundtracks" in Golden State Pops Orchestra and "Disney Fantasia" in The Austin Symphony. Where these symphony orchestras are located could be a reason as to why popular music has also moved into their repertoire, but bringing in new music would interest more people into coming. When new music or music outside of the canon is performed in a orchestra then my consideration about attending one increases. The simple fact of hearing a musical piece being played in a different kind of way creates interest and that's what these orchestras keep in mind when introducing different music. If some of the music I listen to could be "remixed" and incorporated in an orchestra then I wouldn't mind considering attending one of these performances.

"Classical music institutions have similarly made listening the act of a specialist. "

In "The Problem with Geniuses" by Sara Haefeli, she describes how listening to classical music requires a skill. Perhaps this is a reason as to why not many people today show little interest in classical music. It has become complicated or not as easy to listen to as we have moved further past the era in which classical music started. Because of this, Orchestras could have thought up different ideas to appeal to a wider audience.

"Some departments have chosen to revamp their curriculum to displace the primacy of the art music history survey, while others have found ways to undermine a strictly chronological approach that includes spaces for the study of other repertoires,"

In the "Six Easy Ways to Immediately Address Racial and Gender Diversity in Your Music History Classroom" by Kira Thurman and Kristen Turner, it is stated how even the study of music is thinking about changing what they study. Not only are american symphony orchestras making changes but schools as well. Although they may not be studying Disney song in school, they are aware of the need for change. The change of music being studied is due to under-representation but still adds to the sense of change from the traditional music.
