“If print culture shaped the environment in which the Enlightenment blossomed and set the scene for the Industrial Revolution, participatory media might similarly shape the cognitive and social environments in which twenty-first-century life will take place (a shift in the way our culture operates). For this reason, participatory media literacy is not another subject to be shoehorned into the curriculum as job training for knowledge workers.” (Rheingold 99)

Main Idea: Participatory media, such as blogs, social media, etc., is something that should be taught in schools no matter what. It is pivotal information, and schools are not keeping up with the major culture shift that is participatory media.

3 Supporting Ideas: Literacy currently is directly connected to media, teachers should be helping students discover what they really care about through the tools they use personally, and teaching media can teach kids individuality while connecting civic engagement.

"They are no longer constrained to occupy the role of mere readers, viewers, and listeners. They can be, instead, participants in a conversation."

Main Idea: It is still undecided whether or not the blogsphere is truly creating a public sphere. Those who are in favor of the blogsphere believe that these forums encourage people to engage in collaboration, debate, and education from their fellow citizens.
1) Supporting idea: In order for the a public sphere to manifest from blogging, people must be aware of the possible political impact that such posts can have
2) Hegemonic control could eradicate the possibility of such productive media
3) Implementing media-based education is critical. This would present information about how to utilize the power of publishing your own work in order to create change in their lives and the democracy.

"We can no longer trust the author to guarantee the veracity of work; today’s media navigators must develop critical skills in order to

find their way through the oceans of information, misinformation, and disinformation now available."
Explain: Researching is essential because not all sources are true and reliable. It's important to educate yourself on the topic and explore various sources.

Main Idea: Make sure the sources are credible and reliable.

3 Supporting Ideas:
1. Freedom of Democratized publishing
2. Inaccurate and fallaciously argued information; it is up to the readers and, most significantly, other bloggers to actively question the questionable.
3. wiki, like most websites, are collaborative Web sites that can be edited by any user, though some require registration or a password.

"Many bloggers serve as “intelligent filters” for their publics by selecting, contextualizing, and presenting links of particular interest for that public."

Explanation: In participatory media, others are able to participate in what traditional media keeps closed off. When the "public" you are trying to reach has knowledge about the information and can actively participate in discussion, this is different than what we are used to in most media, where an "expert" presents to us information that they know more about and can sway.

1. It is necessary to know how to blog to actually access the public you are trying to engage.
2. Engaging in conversation via a public forum can allow students to be more open minded and may encourage them to act upon what you are saying, which needs to be considered before posting.
3. The public that you are referring to is critical when writing to connect versus writing to "tell."

Civic engagement and media is done publicly
2. Youth should be involved in democracy
3. Public voice is active and generative
