Ewes should be synchronized prior to insemination. Estrus synchronization is an artificially induced hormone causes groups of sexually mature and cycling females to come into heat (estrus) and ovulate at approximately the same time. This is done to optimise conception rates within ewes. The use of teaser helps to bring ewes into season and can improve conception rates. Rams produce a chemical substance called a pheromone, the smell of which stimulates the onset of estrus. When ewes and rams are in constant sight, or smell the pheromones are much less effective at inducing estrus.

Sexual behavior largely depends on hormones. Ewes in heat will seek out a ram and closely associate with him, rub neck & body against him, and stand for mating. In ram they would follow the female, rubbing against the side of the female, biting the her wool, nosing the genital region and sniffing her urine then extending the neck with uncurled lips, running the tongue in and out, and raising and lowering one front leg in a stiff-legged striking motion.
Agr 302 small ruminate
