When the bottle of the age-defying elixir breaks, the characters partaking in the experiment are forced to either accept themselves in their old age or seek out the fountain of youth themselves. When the fight breaks out and the bottle shatters, the story reaches its climax, and it is finally revealed that the youth serum might've been only an illusion to the greedy, insecure minds of the doctor's colleagues.

"Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" absolutely deserves a place in our high-school curriculum, along with his other work. His writing not only represents an important era in American History, with his anti-transcendentalist and romantic writing style, but it is also very complex. His plots are vivid and imaginative with important themes and worldly advice inserted sporadically, and his whimsical syntax is refreshing and full of figurative language. It is a perfect literary teaching example for coming-of-age minds.
