It's an interesting, engaging and motivating activity that encourages teamwork.  QR codes add the note of mystery, which is a great incentive for motivation and engagement. It involves students'  higher order thinking skills and problem solving skills. It involves and improves their digital skill as well as reading comprehension and speaking, because they have to cooperate and communicate within the group. So it is fun but also very useful. Teacher creates and moderates the game and has the role of facilitator of learning. It is up to the teacher to choose which vocabulary, collocations or grammar to use, and how hard to make the hunt.

I have used QR codes for a simple treasure hunt in my school before. Once it was a treasure hunt for crossword clues (in the classroom), and a few times they were treasure hunts all around the whole school. Easter Treasure Hunt was a real treasure hunt, because in the last room there was a treasure awaiting (the group who finished first got chocolate eggs :-)).
I like QR treasure hunts, as well as my students. All my students like QR treasure hunts, 5 graders and 8 graders alike. The most interesting treasure hunt was when each QR code led the contestants to another QR code until the final QR code which led them to the treasure itself.
Let me answer the questions:
The answer to the first and second and even third question is actually the same - the activity such as this one - a QR code treasure hunt - brings students together, forces them to collaborate, because each student in the group has a role and needs to work on his/her part in order for the group to succeed. They are competitive, active and motivated, and they actually use the language and structures without knowing it or thinking about it. They practise and revise structures they learn in class and most of the time use what they know to solve a problem - they engage in higher order thinking activities, and this is the ultimate goal of the teacher - using language to create, analyse, and use the language and structures.
They practise listening and reading comprehension skills, as well as their communicative skills. They practise team work, collaboration with teammates...
The teacher decides on the content, he/she is the moderator, facilitator, creator of the game and supervisor... checks that everything runs smoothly and helps the students if they need help.  
All this can be achieved without QR codes, but they add to the mystery and motivation, since it involves digital resources and devices, which makes the activity more attractive for children. They are more active, even students with poor knowledge get their role and they feel important and valuable to the group. They use mobile phones and tablets all the time, and when they get to use them in school, for the purpose of practising and learning, it is always better and more attractive than any other activity and in addition, they develop their digital skills, which might be helpful in their further education, their job or life in general.
QR codes are also very useful for sharing information with students more easily. I like the activity, I'm sure it best suits the young learners, because they are more kinaethetic types of learners, they love moving around and all sorts of competitive activities like that. Yes, there's an element of mystery and discovery in it and the spirit of adventure. It gets more engaging as it procedes and I'm sure it's very good for developing the team spirit and learners' autonomy, as the teacher's role during the activity is just a facilitator (if it's properly orgnized of course).

I think this is what each teacher is trying to achieve. Also, in this way we don't become outdated old fashioned teachers. 
The kid on the video is cute! I wish every teacher could be such an expert, but we really need to catch up!

I think the teacher in this kind of activities has three main roles: planner, guider, and feedback giver. As for the planner stage, the teacher is in charge of selecting the options that favor his/her students the most. 

What is the role of the students?
Active participants, they are the ones in charge of the activity. I mean, the success of the activity depends on students energy and how engaged they are on what they are supposed to do. 

What change does this bring to class atmosphere? 
I definitely think that the class turns into a more relaxed environment in which gamification (scavenger hunt), competition and active participation would make the class a lot more interesting; therefore, I feel students will learn more. The fact that the teacher is not in front of the class, but rather going around the classroom to help students and clarify doubts. 

What is the function of the use of QR codes in this activity?
The function of QR codes in this activity is to show where to go next if we think of them as for the activity itself. However, as for me, they also help to keep students paying attention and looking forward to next activity/question. 

Would you use QR Challenge/Treasure Hunt/Scavenger Hunt in your teaching?
I would definitely use plan an activity like this for my class. Since I feel it is going to take a little longer, I would plan it for a review/practice exercise before the quiz or the exam. This in order to review information and have students relax a little before evaluating them.

I find treasure hunt games with qr codes to be very interesting and motivational for the students. The teacher here has the role of the "master mind" who plans everything and prepares the students for the activity itself. He or she also plays a role of a guider who will make sure tat all of the students are on the right track with the activities. In this way the teacher can follow the students' progress and motivate them to cooperate and work togethertowards the solution. The qr codes will definitely bring more motivation and make the lesson more dynamic. A teacher sets a quest with the list of links related to the topic, and these links are transformed into QR codes. In this case students follow their own pace, are responsible for the learning and fell much more motivated as the activity looks like a quest. QR codes can be posted anywhere around the school premises to add more excitement.
