It is a very difficult problem to solve, especially for grade 6 learners. They don't have the knowledge of algebraic equations yet, so they would've needed to make another plan.

I tried to not bring the above into solving the problem. I started to change the 52 to 50. I imagined that Mpho and David both had 25 sweets each.

Mpho: 25-11-5 = 9

David: 25+5 = 30

Difference: 30-9 = 21 (NOT = 19)

Then I tried to work with 51. Mpho had 24 and David 27.

Mpho: 24-11-5 = 8

David: 27+5=31

Difference: 31-8 = 23 (now I noticed that the difference went up and that Mpho must have more sweets than David from the start).

So my next step was to try 27 (Mpho) and 25 (David):

Mpho: 27-11-5 = 11

David: 25+5 = 30

Difference: 30-11 = 19 (YES!)

This concludes that Mpho started with 27 sweets and David with 25.

They had 52 to start with. If you subtract 11 that was eaten, you left with 41 between them. 52-11=41.

David has 19 more sweets than Mpho, so that should also be subtracted from the total. 41-19=22.

Now that the difference (19) has been subtracted, the rest (22) should be divided equally between them. 22/2=11.

This means that at the end Mpho had 11 sweets and David has 11+19=30.

if you subtract the 5 that Mpho gave David 30-5, you get that David had 25 sweets in the beginning.

Work out what the difference between the two is: 31 - 10 = 21 (this can't be right as the answer is not 19.
Try again: instead of dividing equally, I give Mpho 27 (26 + 1) and David 25 (26 - 1)
Same process: Mpho -> 27 - 11 - 5 = 11
David -> 25 + 5 = 30
Difference -> 30 - 11 = 19
Therefore, my answer is David originally had 25.

I decided to divide the 52 sweets between Mpho and David and work towards finding which pair of numbers would deliver a difference of 19.

First

Mpho got 26 and David 26 and then I subtracted the 11 sweets Mpho ate and the 5 Mpho gave away which left Mpho with 10. I then added the 5 to David's 26. The difference between the number of sweets they had was 21.

not 19.

So...

I gave Mpho 25 and David 27 and then subtracted the 11 sweets Mpho ate and the 5 Mpho gave away which left Mpho with 11. I then added the 5 to David's 27. The difference between the number of sweet they had was 23.

not 19.

Since the difference was now higher it means in order for the difference to be lower Mpho had to get more than David and it had to be more than 26.

So finally

I gave Mpho 27 and gave David 25.

Subtracting the 11 and 5 from Mpho's 27 left 11 and adding 5 to David's 25 gave 30. The difference would now be 19.

Thus at the start Mpho must have had 27 and David 25

I decided to solve it with a logical approach (as the children in my class would). I started by dividing the 52 sweets equally between them. However, after taking away the 11 sweets that Mpho ate and the 5 that she gave to Daniel, she has 10 left and David, having received 5 sweets, has 31 sweets. This means that David has 21 more than Mpho. I decided to give Mpho 27 at the beginning, followed the same pattern of thinking and Mpho ended with 11 sweets and David with 30, the difference being 19.

I did trial & error method, seeing that Gr6 do not have the knowledge yet to solve problems algebraically.

First divided the sweets equally between them (26 each), subtracted Mpho's 11 that was eaten and then the 5 that he gave David, which left him with 10 sweets. David would then have 26 + 5 = 31 sweets. Difference between 31 and 10 is 21.

I then opted for Mpho=27 sweets and David 25 (which makes up the total of 52 sweets). Mpho: 27 - 11 - 5 = 11

David: 25 + 5 = 30

Difference = 19, therefore David had 25 sweets at the beginning.

I tried the trial and error process since Grade 6 learners have no knowledge of algebra.

First I will divide the sweets equally between the 2 which will leave each one with 26 sweets.

I then worked with Mpho which will be 26 -11-5= 10 sweets

David will be 26 + 5 = 31.

I then subtracted 31 - 10 which gave me 21 as a difference an not 19.

I then gave Mpho 27 sweets and David 25 sweets.

27 - 11- 5 = 11 (Mpho)

25 + 5 = 30

The problem with this problem is:

For a learner this question is not clear enough, might be a bit confusing.
Lacks information and it is too advanced, most learners will divide the sweets by 2, or might assume that both Mpho and David have 52 sweets each.

I started off by dividing the sweets equally - 26 M and 26 D. I subtracted 11 from M's 26 as well as 5 from M's sweets. This resulted in M having 10 left. D gained 5 sweets and had a result of 31. The difference did not give me 19 so I realized this doesn't work.

I then tried D 25 and M 27. Did the same and ended up with a difference of 19 sweets.

Final answer: David had 25 sweets at the beginning.
