- guilty
- sad
- lonely
- reflective
EVIDENCE
The unexpected death of Soren is juxtaposed with Isla's brother's experience of the death of Tom.

Bo feels guilty for Soren's death because he did not let Soren "win rock, paper, scissors". The sombre tone suggests how Bo blames himself for the death of Soren.

The "silence of Soren" for Bo "will be terrifying". The auditory shows there is going to be a huge void now that Soren is gone. This shows how Bo is upset and sad about the death of Soren.

Bo states how "something inside" him "goes very cold". The metaphor shows how Bo feels there is something missing in his life making him feel lonely and quite sensitive. Also, Bo says how the "silence" will "be the loneliest sound of all", also suggesting how he is feeling empty and incomplete without Soren

Bo is reflective towards the end of the chapter as he lists the things that Soren use to do such as "talking about his camera, about the photos he took yesterday." He also states that Soren talked about "Rolling Stones. About Pink Floyd". The short sentences indicate Bo and Soren's strong friendship and he is reflecting the things they used to do.

The master says "there is nothing we can do". The sad tone is showing how lots of people are upset by this situation.

Friendly
Fun
Kind
Bo ran down the concrete steps and got down on the grass. He rolled around, over and over". This shows how friendly and how isla likes him so much due to his unique way of having fun

"Bo took us inside and he washed my brothers face with a hot face washer". This shows how kind and caring Bo is as he stops rolling around in the grass to help Isla's brother who was experiencing hay fever from the grass.

"Bo looked down at his stained T-shirt, brown with dirt and green with grass. It's perfect he said My t-shirt is perfect". This shows Bo's unique personality as most people would not be happy that their t-shirt was stained but Bo loves the fact that his shirt is stained. This also reinforced the fun, silly and friendly traits in which Bo holds.

Character Traites

Stranger/Unfamiliar

Eye-catching

Scary

Welcoming

Title 'A Giant at the Table' - This title gives the reader an want to find out who this giant is. Garrett keeps the reader waiting till the end of the chapter to build suspense. This suspense created from the title is relieved through the words 'this is Bo'.

'There was a giant in our house' - metaphor as Bo is just another human. Scary as he is described as a giant which is a mythical creature. This description contradicts the one we get at the start of the novel in the Prologue. Showing us that Isla views Bo in different ways at different ages.

'This is Bo' - Acts as a relief to the build up of suspense to who this giant is.

'I tried not to look at him, but I did look at him' - Isla's eyes are drawn to him as she has never seen someone like him before.

'his eyes were grey-blue like the sea' - Simile, showing us that his eyes are very colourful and eye-catching. Reference to the seaman he is.

'I could feel the man looking at me' - the use of language throughout the description of Bo shows us that there is an immediate connection between Isla and Bo.

Repetition of the word 'Hello' by Bo shows us that he is welcoming and wants Isla to feel comfortable around him, and that he wants to start conversation with Isla such as through the words 'how was the movie'

'His chair was pushed out so that he could fit ... her chair was close to the table' - Shows that there are big differences/contrast between Bo and Isla's mother.
