Mentimeter

Mentimeter.com is not an education-specific website, but it can be a wonderfully-useful tool for educators. A very simplistic approach to polling, Mentimeter allows one person to set up a series of questions and then send an easy-to-use and no-account-required voting code to get immediate feedback. This can be used for formative assessments when you want to know how the class as a whole, rather than specific individual students are feeling about a topic. You are limited to 2 survey and 5 quiz-type questions for each presentation, from my understanding of the pricing plan, but for the purpose of quick formative checks of perceived understanding, it can do the trick.

Getkahoot.com is a website that allows teachers to create timed quiz and survey questions to which students respond via any internet-ready device. This is great for review games, but it can also be used as a "Blind Kahoot," meaning students take the "quiz" as a way of providing teachers with baseline data.

While most might be familiar with this tool already, I wanted to make sure to include it because I use it so much for review, and have also used it for pre-assessments in my own classroom.

What started out as just basic digital flashcards has now turned into a full-blown learning suite. Quizlet.com comes to you free with the ability to make flashcards to study, play individual review games for those terms, study items as diagrams, and even play a whole-class or small-group review game. A sample flashcard set is provided via the link below.

Plickers

Since not every classroom has 1:1 capabilities, and sometimes it's more beneficial to have technology "put away" when assessing student knowledge or understanding, the use of Paper Clickers (hence "Plickers") is really beneficial. For this to work, the teacher either projects a question and options or provides them on paper. Students then hold up their assigned Plickers card facing whatever direction represents their letter-choice answer (if a student thinks the answer is B, he will hold his QR square up with "B" at the top). The teacher then uses his/her phone/tablet to scan the room to record each student's answers, allowing for real-time feedback and whole-class data.
