I have been in a co-taught class as a para this year, and after reading chapter 8, co-teaching in theory sounds amazing and beneficial. However, the class I am in does not seem to benefit students. One benefit from the book is "availablity of diverse learning techniques," and from the class I am in, that is not happening.

How can teachers ensure that co-teaching collaboration is happening? In the co-taught class I am in, it seems like the teachers missed the co-planning stage where they. "discuss how they are going to differeniate the material for the range of students in the classroom." There is no differeniating or scaffolding. The "co-taught class" is missing the key foundations that make it inclusive and a place where all students can thrive.

After reading chapter 7 has given me ideas on how I want to keep track of my students' data. Something I really like and have seen work in practice is informal observations, creating a record-keeping sheet. Having this on you when teaching specific lessons will be helpful to quickly fill out to have that data and see if there is growth.

I love the portfolio assessment. It is student-centric, and it gives students autonomy over their work and allows them to be creative. This is also great for IEP meetings where it is easy to look at data while also allowing the student to present their own portfolio. I want to do this in my classroom.

After reading part one of Rethinking Disability, I felt like engagement is one of the biggest takeaways. Remember that in order to learn, all students must be engaged. Engagement is in lesson planning, in assessments, planning materials, and learning about the students. All students learn differently, which is beautiful, but it means planning a lesson having multiple means of engagment. Using UDL, having attention to meaning, and being intentional with each lesson.
