After the traumatizing event of 9/11 in 2001, racism against Muslim and Arabs went up 1,700% (K, Echlund). The Country on a whole experienced fear. The combination of fear andignorance, has lead our country to the marginalization of people of people not only of Islamic religious beliefs, but those looking steriotypically "middle Eastern". From the effect of the tragic 9/11 attack. A pastor directs a Qur'an burning on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and a mass shooting in a Sikh by a man with a 9/11 tattoo on his arm . The reaction to 9/11 against Muslims and those of Middle Eastern appearance can be seen as extreme and unreasonanable as the attack itself.

With the 1990s allowing the most legal immigration, the measurement of immigrant in the 2000s was at about 40 million, with three fourth's of them coming before the year 2000. Progressively over the years, more and more immigrants came to the United States, and even in the 2000s, when the job growth went from 22% in the 90s to a staggering -4%, more immigrants immigrated than ever before, leaving themselves with the highest unemployment rate ever in immigrants. because the economy was at a low in 2008, immigrants were seen as taking american jobs, with 12 million immigrants living in America not paying taxes. "Were a nation of immigrants, but we are also a nation of law". After 9/11, border patrol was doubled on the basis of national security, protecting against "terrorism and drugs". President Bush presented a 5 part plan to solve the immigration crisis that was supposed to satisfy everybody by making a middle ground between deportation and amnesty. Before Bush took office it took 100 days to process someone out of the country, but when he left, it took nearly 20.

Me: What do you think were the most important issues of the
2000s?

Dad: The most important Social Issues were the….um….um… in
the United States was the rise, and the increase of acceptance of, um the
conflict between the Conservative ideas and the rise and increase in Liberal
Ideas.

Me: Is that a social issue?

Dad: Well there was more acceptances of homosexuality, single
sex marriage, and states started to legalize marriage for them. I remember when that started to happen and
states were legalizing marriage for homosexuals.

Me: What did you think of it when it started happening?

Dad: I did not see what was wrong with homosexuals getting
married. Grandma and Grandpa were always very liberal, and many of my patients are
homosexuals and transgender (my Dad is an infectious disease doctor and has pacients with HIV and AIDS) , and um, I say live and let live, It’s none of my business or anyone else’s
for that matter who a person marries.

The 2000s decade was a decade that has made an impact on the path to acceptance and attainment of lesbians and gay rights in the society.

The supreme court case of Lawrence v. Texas in 2003 put an end to all Laws in the United States that prohibited homosexual activities. That was one of the first steps toward equal rights taken for homosexuals.

The first state to legalize civil union was Vermont in 2000, slowly states legalized civil unions as well.

Although it was they had many roadblock, like the legalization of same sex marriage, Prop 8 which made same sex marriage illegal , it was a 2 step forward 1 step back process

With new technology being invented in the 2000s which made communication easier and faster, people had access to new information faster than they ever had before. The Rise in the number of liberals could be accounted for a wider access of information, which took the bounderies off of the information the people do get ( for example if a person only knows things that her parents and church says and takes it as fact). This new method of communication could have given people an opportunity to interpret things themself instead of being confined to the opinion of those around them.
