What is the history of fast fashion? Chronological/Sequential

There is lots of history behind fast fashion and Shien. It first started in the 1880s, where immigrants came to america for better job opportunities but got forced into harsh labor for businesses. Also, In 1846 the sewing machine was invented and contributed to the increase in scale of clothing manufacturing. In the late 1900s and the early 2000s, fast fashion became popular in america with people participating in consumerism. That is when people started to care about their clothes and liked to partake in trends. Shein has been a big tribute to fast fashion. Shein was founded in October of 2008 and has been successful ever since. Shein has been reported for stealing many peoples designs and on July 16, 2021, Shein stole a girls sweater design.

According to TIME, “In 2013, the world had its reality come crashing to them when the Rana Square clothing manufacturing complex in Bangladesh collapsed, killing over 1,000 employers and workers. This devastating event was a huge wake-up call to all consumers and business enterprises. Following the incident, shoppers truly began addressing fast fashion and pondering what the true and dangerous costs of their $5 t-shirts were.” This shows you that fast fashion has been along for a long time and it just getting worse.

What are the human impacts? Cause/Effect

Shein has a huge impact on humans. First of all, Names, Credit card info, and passwords were stolen and hacked on Shein which caused people to become suspicious. Shein also takes jobs away from other people because they steal others ideas and sell it for cheaper on their website, causing the person Shein stole from, to loose business. Shein partakes in child labor by employing people as young as 14 and the effects on those kids mental health is huge. Many other places participate in child labor such as Hershey’s, Kit-Kat, GAP, Nike, and many more. Shein treats their workers really bad; They make their employees work 18 hour shifts which is more than half of the day, they only get 1 day off a month, and the workers are penalized ⅔ of their daily wage if they made a mistake on a a piece of clothing. This shows that Shein is a very toxic place to work.

Fast fashion and shopping has had a huge effect on society because people find a thrill in shopping which causes excessive consumerism. Excessive consumerism is bad for the environment and also the person consuming.

Fast fashion has also effected humans a lot. Here are some of the negative impacts of fast fashion: Child labor, forced labor, insane work hours, abysmal pay, and exposure to toxic chemicals. Huge business owners rarely know what is happening to their workers so they need to be more careful. The first major incident in fast fashion was the fire that broke out in New york’s Triangle Shirtwaist Production in 1911 that killed 146 young workers because of the harsh labor conditions. That is just scary and sad. Fast fashion and Shein have many horrible impacts on humans.

Fast fashion has caused so many environmental problems. According to The Good Trade, “Product tests on 47 SHEIN products found that seven of them (15%), contained hazardous chemicals that break EU regulatory limits, with five of these products breaking the limits by 100% or more, while according to the tests a total of 15 of the products contain hazardous chemicals at levels of concern (32%).” Because those products contain hazardous chemicals, it can be very harmful to the environment when burnt. Many products in fast fashion stores contain micro-plastics which effect and pollute the ocean. Shein uses polyester in their clothing and polyester needs a lot of energy to produce so its very air and water polluting.

Shein uses a lot of plastic because they individually wrap every item that you purchase in a plastic bag which just ends up in the trash. They could easily fit all of the clothes in one plastic bag to reduce the amount of plastic used in the shipping.

According to NPR, “92 million tons of textile waste is created annually by the fashion industry. And shockingly, about 30% of the clothes produced each season are never even sold. These unsold garments are often burned, as it’s cheaper and easier for the company than finding a way to reuse or recycle them.” Because of their selfish ways, all of those products went to waste instead of reusing them and donating them.

What are the economic or political impacts? Cause/Effect

Fast fashion and many businesses supporting fast fashion have high economic and political impacts. One major businesses supporting fast fashion is Shein. You could say Shein is the definition of fast fashion. Shein destroys jobs because they will take ideas from other businesses and sell it for cheaper, causing people to buy Sheins product over the original one because it is cheaper. The owner of Shein is valued at 100 billion dollars while his workers make not even 1% of that; The workers get paid 4 cents per clothing item. Therefore, the workers are not making enough for a living. Shein also pays many people to post hauls of clothing they got from Shein, even if it causes them to lie, to promote their business. According to TIME, “Mélo is one of the thousands of influencers on TikTok and Instagram who works with Shein to post “haul” videos, where she tries on piles of clothes, invites followers to visit Shein’s pop-ups, and promotes their sale events. It’s a social media strategy that has been wildly successful for the company, pushing Shein to the top of the fashion ladder—and making it the world’s most popular fashion brand in 2022.” A law was passed in 1935 by the Congress and it was called National Labor Relations Act. The National Labor Relations Act causes workers to be protected. One country that produces fast fashion is China. China can easily produce fast fashion because China has a large population making it easy to employee people and also make money off of consumers. Chinese Consumers are become more aware of world wide fashion trends resulting in constant clothing consuming. As you can see, fast fashion has high economic and political impacts.

How can we solve the problem? Problem/Solution

There are many ways that we individuals can help put an end to fast fashion. One solution is Recycling clothes. You can pass your clothes onto other people that could reuse and re wear them instead of burning and wasting clothes. Another solution is if your clothes are too small or too big, or you just don't want them anymore, but is still in good condition, then you should donate it for others to reuse. If you don't want you clothes because they are getting worn out, or have some stains, then you can donate them to animal shelters so they can use them for beddings. This might be a challenge to do but try to buy better quality clothes that have less harmful chemicals in them so when they do get burned it doesn't harm the environment as much. An issue in the fashion industry is that they don't have a big inclusive size range. I found a more sustainable businesses called Aday. Aday has size ranges from 2XS to 2XL and also uses recycled materials. I also found a campaign being held right now called “Shut Down SHEIN” To educate U.S government officials and the American government about the causes Shein has to our environment. These are only a few ways to stop and fix fast fashion but there is still so much we can do to put an end to it!
