As the river reaches the middle basin there is more erosion taking place on the banks and bed causing it to grow and the rate of discharge to increase. This continues to happen towards the lower basin, the river is much wider and deeper, causing there to be less friction and the velocity to be higher.</p>]]></description>

In the upper course, near the source, the river tends to be narrower and shallower because the river is often small with a steep gradient and high-energy flow that erodes downward (vertical erosion). The flow is concentrated in a smaller area. As the river moves into the middle course, the gradient becomes gentler, and lateral erosion begins to widen the channel. This results in an increase in the cross-sectional area. In the lower course, as the river approaches the mouth, it becomes even wider and deeper due to increased lateral erosion and sediment deposition, allowing it to carry a larger volume of water.</p>]]></description>
