I really like this exercise. It requires silence and full concentration from the students, a very good skill to practice. And the talk about sounds. The sound language as I call it. Creates a lot of reflections. I am a bit unsure about how to use it in language class, but I like the idea Charles writes, about making a story from the sound or think of adjectives, emotions, feeling.

This exercise is good for developing listening skills as you have to fine tune your ear to pick up the different pitches of the sounds (differentiating sound patterns soft loud slow fast etc) . Also there was a rhythmic pattern to how the sounds were played (order) link in with structure and expression and dynamics - what the sounds represent - if added to a story !!

Task: Listen to the sound, grab the image, run and stick on the wall...
To support the activity, I would give the students two options: 1. Use the grid and write words (in TL or L1 or both) in the appropriate spaces.
2. Draw the images they hear as a sequence (for those with limited vocabulary).
Both ways would be shown as an example first.

I am learning a lot of all this stuff! The sound of dropping water, separated by silence are a booster to all kind of thoughts (I imagined an old water well and the wind pushing a hanging metal pail from a chain). Great resource for scaffolding children's imagination. Love it!

It seemed water falling in a container with more water, a metal creaking noise and maybe some more water falling into a plastic object. The water seemed to follow a pattern as it fell, like in a song, first slowly and then faster and every time the pattern is used it includes new sounds. Pauses are longer at the end and the shriek suddenly stops. It seemed like a tap opening and closing.
