There were mainly two reasons for doing so. First, that the prison was in the center of France, in Paris, and was the symbol of tyranny and the monarch. The second one was that when the large crowd raided the Army Hospital and took their rifles. They didn't had much gunpowder, but they knew that they could find more gunpowder and ammunition at the prison of Bastille.

Mid-Morning, the crowd gathered around the Bastille and ordered the governor of the prison, Governer De Launey to surrender the prison and hand over the gunpowder. While some of the people from the crowd went inside the prison to negotiate and have a talk, the impatient crowd waiting outside started the attack stormed the prison, and released the prisoners. They even cut off Governor De Launey's head and strikes it through a pike in the middle, with his head stuck on the top of it. So on 5 October 1789, a group of 7,000 women started marching towards the king's palace in Versailles. Thye wanted to confront the king directly and wanted to bring the king to Paris and making the king fulfill their demands. On their way to Versailles, the crowd grew into tens of thousands of people. When the queen came to know about their problem of shortage of bread, she commented that they should eat cake. This enraged the crowd even more. Some of them even managed to enter the palace.
