"I packed my things and my two babies into this wheelbarrow and began pushing to Chungking four days before the Japanese marched into Kweilin."(Page 26)
-I believe that she is quite literally walking into the unknown, packing everything she holds dear, or rather what she can carry including her children, and just walking away from everything she has known. This represents her bravery and desperation to survive.

Your'e just watching people make mistakes."(Page 33)
-I believe that the difference between Chinese man Jong and Jewish Mah jong is that the Chinese version represents a sense of stability, and the latter lacks it. This is what is represented when Auntie Lin says, "your'e just watching people make mistakes."

"My life changed completely when I was twelve, the summertime heavy rain came. The fen River which ran through the middle of my family's land flooded the plains. ...Even the house on top of our little hill became unlivable. ...We were so poor in all of this mess."(Page 53)
-This obviously represents loss, devastation, and uncertainty, but i believe it could also represent rebirth, and renewal. Not of her life necessarily, but of her herself. She begins a new life.

"I could not keep my hands steady." (Page 55)
-Fear of the unknown is represented through the unsteadiness of her hand, because although she 'knows' where she belongs in the world, she still is uncertain of her standing, and whether or not she will be able to bring honor to her family.

"(Page 44)
-Auntie could be described with several different words including, abrasive, aggressive, and definitely threatening. This is especially apparent in this scene from the book. She almost asserts her dominance over him, and then continues by saying a very hurtful thing.

Next to my bed was Popo. she would pour cool water over my neck from the hallowed cup of a large grapefruit." (Page 47)
-I believe that this shows her sense of responsibility, which is based upon her love for her family, but it is represented in the way she cares for the girl, even though she was;t exactly pleased with her or her mother at the time.

And then my mother cut a piece of her meat from her arm and put it in her soup." (Page 48)
-I believe this shows that the mother is very forgiving, because although her mother was very responsible, she almost resented her own daughter. She is shown to be mourning her mothers passing even though she knew of her mothers distaste towards her.
