Students will analyze primary source documents about migration and US immigration policy during the 19th and 20th centuries. These will draw from testimonials, poetry, quotes, news clippings, and songs from immigrants in multiple languages. In groups students will be assigned a certain texts, discuss it in any language they like, and create a poster analyzing organizing the information they found. Students will identify the year the text was published, the author, and the authors positionality and perspective. After all groups are done, the teacher will post the sources around the classroom in chronological order to create a timeline which also includes changes in US immigration policy over the years. The next day students will do a gallery walk, taking notes and discussing with a partner in any language about how immigrant perspectives responded to the changes in US policy.

This reading reveals how false narratives around bilingual students and the unregulated way students are labeled long-term English learners leads to misconceptions about bilingual students which flattens them into a single academic, linguistic, and literate profile. I found this text foundational because of its advocacy away from relying on bureaucratic classifications and towards a more nuanced, accurate understanding of bilingual students as individuals.
