As profits declined and unemployment rates increased, the Panic of 1837 created major distress among the people. These Americans desired a fresh start and seeked to find a new life in the west. The abundance of land in the West appealed to farmers, miners, and merchants. These workers were attracted to the open land, and felt a need to expand their land to earn money. The Transportation Revolution contributed to westward expansion because railroads became popular and proved to be the most effective way of trading and traveling. The rapid increase in railroad production motivated settlers to establish communities in the West.

They were pressured to move off their land which they had owned for centuries. With the increasing amount of European-Americans settling on their lands, the Native Americans had two choices; adapt by conforming to the culture, or fight back. Every time the Natives tried to fight back, they were badly defeated by the settlers moving to the West. One example of this was the Black Hawk War, where Chief Black Hawk led a rebellion against the U.S. The settlers had a superior military system, which made it easy to defeat them, causing the death of many Natives. To help resolve the tension, the Fort Larame treaty was proposed. It gave Native Americans reservations of land east of the Rocky Mountains. Eventually the settlers and Native Americans came to a truce amongst one another.

However, where their culture is thriving, their economies are lacking. Many Native American tribes lack necessary resources on their reservations. There is no health care due to underfunding and there are not enough pharmacies and doctors offices. Health care is important to have, especially with three or more generations all living in one house. There is also an absence of utilities in homes. 4 to 8 out of 10 adults on these reservations are unemployed, and those who are employed are often earning below poverty wages.
