In the 17th century the England was protestant. The Stuart kings were protestant but they were influenced by catholics. In fact James I married the catholic daughter of the king of france. His son, Charles, belived in the divine rights of kings and tried to govern without parlament. This fact led to a civil war.

The parliamentarias led by Oliver Cromwell won the conflict. Cromwell became the lord protector of England, Scotland and Ireland, and it was called Commonwealth.

But he was very strict and became unpopular: after his death the parlament restore the monarchy.

Under Cromwell strict puritan rules were enstabilished:

☞ abolition of games and dances;

☞ pubs and theathers were close down;

☞ it was illegal to go out for a walk;

☞ good puritans were encouraged to spy their neighbours and denounce any immoral behavior.
