In their town, there is a fence that separates the African-Americans side of town from the white side. Jacqueline Woodson wrote about it on her website, "I wanted to write about how powerful kids can be. Clover and Annie fight against segregation by becoming friends. They don’t believe in the ideas adults have about things so they do what they can to change the world. We all have this power." This book would be best for third graders. This type of vocabulary and text relates to the literacy standard 3.FL.F.5 which is read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. The text structure varies based on the category. The use of graphics is very complex. The illustrations used extend the meaning of the text. The organization of the text is only slightly complex. It is very clear and easy to predict what is going to happen. The language features are all slightly complex. The conventionality is very easy to understand. The vocabulary and sentence structure are both simple and very familiar. The meaning is very complex. For a child the theme may not be as obvious as it may be to an adult. That being said, if they think hard enough and discuss it enough in between them they can get it. The knowledge demands are different too depending on the category. The life experiences is very complex. This has to do with the same reasoning as the meaning. The intertextuality and cultural knowledge is exceedingly complex. It has many references to other or outside cultural elements.

From the front cover, most readers can guess it is about a young girl and her cat but as the story goes along it is up to the reader to try and figure out the point of the story. The grade level that this is most suited for is third grade students. The literacy standard that follows along with this is 3.FL.F.5 which reads "Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension." There has to be some type of comprehension background to really get the message of this book. The text structure of this story is very complex. The use of graphics is the only thing that extends the plot of gives any meaning to the story. The language features are not really thing in this book, considering there is no text in it.
The meaning of this story is very complex. It is not explicitly said, the reader has to infer it based only on the illustrations. The knowledge demands is slightly complex.

The Undefeated by Kwame Alexander is a moving book that remembers the "unforgettable, unafraid and unbowed, famous and overlooked" figures from black history. This book is most appropriate for students in at least sixth grade, because of the extensive cultural information. The standard is 6.RL.KID.1 and it says, "Analyze what a text says explicitly and draw logical inferences; cite textual evidence to support conclusions." The text structures complexity depends on the category. The organization was slightly complex. It is clear, and easy to predict. The use of graphics is very complex. There were some pages where the illustrations extended the meaning of the few words that were on the page. The language features is slightly complex. The vocabulary and sentence structures are very simple and easy to understand and read. The meaning of this is slightly complex. The theme of this book is very clear and has no subtlety to it. The knowledge demands is exceedingly complex. The life experiences for people reading this book are going to vary dramatically. Some students ill feel much more moved and called out then some other studies while they ar reading. The cultural knowledge of this book also falls under the exceedingly complex category. It is not difficult knowledge to know, but there is a lot of background that must be understood or at least heard about before understanding what this book actually means. All the references mean more when students know what they are about.

Otseliheliga mean we are greatful. With every page turn we see more representations of the Cherokee culture and traditions. It is clear that they are clearly thankful all times throughout the year, no just during thanksgiving like some other cultures might do. A good grade level for this book is first grade. The literacy standard is 1.FL.F.5 which says, "Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension." The text complexity of this text is not very complex. The text structure is moderately complex. The graphics support the text completely. The organization at some times has multiple story lines, but it does follow a main theme of gratefulness. The language features is slightly complex. The vocabulary and sentence structure used is very simple, familiar, and it is easy to follow. The meaning to this story. is also only slightly complex. The main theme is to always be grateful no matter when or the circumstances. This book really pushes that in an obvious way. The knowledge demands of this text a re slightly complex. While it does dive into Cherokee culture, it is not relate on previous background knowledge of that culture. It is more of a teaching.
