         <description><![CDATA[<div><a href="http://siarchives.si.edu/wp3/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/SIA2011-0961.jpg"><strong>The Union military looked into the use of hot air balloons for reconnaissance purposes during the civil war.  There was a push for the balloons by a man named Thaddeus Lowe, who eventually established the Balloon Corps in the army.<br><br>The main purposes of the balloons included evaluation of the landscape, detection of confederate troops, and scouting of different battle tactics.  This new technology allowed the Union to get an upper hand in some battles and it forced the Confederates to spend money of camouflage.<br><br></strong></a><br><br></div>]]></description>

The discharge can be made with all desirable accuracy as rapidly as one hundred and fifty times per minute, and may be continued for hours without danger, as we think, from overheating.          <description><![CDATA[<div>The implementing of iron plates in the ships helped reinforce the impact from enemy fire.<br>An example is when the two vessels engaged each other, and both the Monitor and the Virginia suffered direct hits that failed to penetrate their iron shells. The North had an advantage with better equipment and more tracks but the South was the first to use the trains.          <description><![CDATA[<div>The Confederate States developed the first naval mines as a countermeasure to the Union's blockades. When a ship came in contact with a mine, it would explode and sink it. This led to the development of torpedoes, which are devices with an explosive charge that could destroy something. The torpedoes later were self-propelled.</div>]]></description>
