         <description><![CDATA[<div>Initially it was a big challenge to get my students away from the standard algorithm because they felt it was the "easiest way" to solve each problem. We talked about the difference between memorizing steps and truly understanding what is happening when we apply the steps. I realized that I appreciate people framing the "why" at trainings, PD's etc. and my students appreciated it as well. Once they understood the "why" behind number talks they became much more willing to engage in the process. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think the biggest bump in the road for me was just forcing myself to carve out the time. Once I began to do it more consistently the talks went much smoother.  The students knew what to expect and participated freely and actively. I believe that the number talks truely helped students to understand math concepts  better! </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>My biggest bump is getting students to think past the basic algorithm and understand that there is more than one way to solve a problem.  There were many days when I would ask for "another way'" and I would be the only person talking.  I quickly learned that I would have to repeat a strategy for days before the students would be comfortable and able to use it when solving a problem.  Number Talks did improve Math fluency for many students in my classes.<br> </div>]]></description>

         <title>Standard Algorithm</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I have had the hardest time getting the students that are higher away from the standard algorithm to explain their answers.  This has been especially obvious when I am working with my math team students.  I have incorporated a board game that really makes them focus on the explanation of the answer over going through standard problems.  They have even noticed they are explaining more detail through this game.  </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The biggest bump for my students is to move past using the standard algorithm. I think they always gravitate to that first because they are very comfortable with using it. They know that there are multiples ways they can solve the problem, but they don't want to step out of their comfort zone. </div>]]></description>
