One thing that disappointed Lori and her sibling is when Rex lost his job. So they came up with a solution they didn't like but it was the only way to keep more food in the house, they had to eat less. One quote that represents this is, “I guess we have eat less.” said by Lori. Another time they were disappointed is when when Rose Mary and Rex didn't have any sympathy when any of their children got sexually assaulted. A quote that shows this is when Rex took Lori on a business trip. "You upset about something, Mountain Goat?" For a moment I considered not telling Dad. I was afraid there'd be bloodshed, since he was always going on about how he'd kill anyone who laid a finger on me. Then I decided I wanted to see the guy pummeled."Dad, that creep attacked me when we were upstairs" "I'm sure he just pawed you some," Dad said as we pulled out of the Parking lot. "I knew you could handle yourself." Page 213. When Jeannette moved to New York she got a job as a journalist on the newspaper called The Phoenix. She enjoyed the amount of money she was making. Also, her and her husband Eric have an apartment together that has everything that functions which she didn't have growing up. Jeannette was very happy she was able to finally have a functioning place to live in. This quote shows how Jeannette describes her apartment, “Our apartment was bigger than the entire house on Little Hobart Street, and way fancier. It had shiny oak parquet floors, a foyer with two Steps leading down into the living room--where I slept--and, off to the side, a bedroom that became Lori's. We also had a kitchen with a working refrigerator and a gas stove that had a pilot light, so you didn't need matches to get it going, you just turned the dial, listened to the clicking, then watched the circle of blue flame flare up through the tiny holes in the burner. My favorite room was the bathroom. For example with the foundation of The Glass Castle, it represents a symbol of hope, stability, and their goal for their future. Unfortunately, they have ruined this goal by using that area as a trash disposal because they weren't able to pay for a garbage service for their trash. As a result of this they piled up their foundation for the Glass Castle with trash and messed up their plan for the castle.  As much as they tried to accomplish the Glass Castle, this family can’t carry through with what they want.  According to Jeannette, "The important thing, the reason he and Mom had decided to acquire this particular piece of property, was that it came with plenty of land to build our new house. He planned to get to work on it right away. He intended to follow the blueprints for the Glass Castle, but he had to do some serious reconfiguring and increase the size of the solar cells to take into account that since we were on the north face of the mountain, and enclosed by hills on both sides, we'd hardly ever get any sun." This was Rex's plan for the Glass Castle but it never happened. This picture represents the theme "broken promises" because it shows how every time their parents lie to them they feel shattered.

A lot of times they would look in the trash, dumpsters or the school trash just so they wouldn't starve. According to Rose Mary, "It's not my fault if you're hungry! Don't blame me." At this part of the story the children ate the margarine because they were starving and had not eaten all day. Rose Mary believes it's not her fault they are starving but in reality it is. I chose this picture because I think it represents what the Walls kids hard challenges they have to face in order to survive. ]]> 2022-12-06 19:43:17 UTC https://padlet.com/4030131/ol62qsh66u8m9t85/wish/2411206940 4030131 https://padlet.com/4030131/ol62qsh66u8m9t85/wish/2411207486 The Wall kids had been pretty oblivious to their parents manipulating them growing up until they got more mature and started to realize. As Jeannette reaches 5th grade she realizes both of her parents don't seem to care about her and her siblings feelings. She is now seeing how they dont put in effort to better their family and only seem to care about themselves. Also, she recognizes the amount of excuses her parents use for their actions so they don't have to know how they're actually treating them.  Rose Mary shows her responsibility when they meet their new principal, "Mom explained that we'd left Phoenix in a teensy bit of a hurry, you know how that goes, and unfortunately, in all the commotion, she forgot to pack stuff like school records and birth certificates." This quote shows how Rose Mary didn't think to leave with actual important stuff for her kids, she only grabbed important stuff to her. I chose this picture to show "self-awareness" because I believe this represents the children seeing their true colors they are now disappointed and confused they didn't see it before.

He tries to make it seem as if he is a good dad and try to payoff the bad things he  does but the children see right through him. For example,  Rex destroyed Oz but made it seem like he had no idea what happened and acted oblivious. Jeannette found Oz with no money from her savings and it being broken, she knew right away it was her father. She recognizes how selfish Rex could be and it upsets her. Lori decides to confront Rex about this situation, "You bastard! You stole our money!" Rex replies, "What the goddamn hell are you talking about? And watch your language." This quote shows how he's trying to manipulate them into thinking it wasn't him and it was someone else in the family.
