The image shows the woman that started all of the witch hysteria. Tituba, a slave from native origins was the first woman to be framed as a witch. She had entertained many young women and girls with her voodoo magic while she worked as a slave. Eventually the girl's grew progressively stranger, Tituba was deemed a witch, and put into prison.

The author of the famous play, "The Crucible." He is also most famous for standing up to the House Un-American Activity Committee when being accused of being a communist. This experience is what inspired Miller to make the play, as it was just like what had happened during the Salem witch trials. Although the play was not very well received at first, it has become one of his most played works.

There were many young in Tituba's audience. They stayed and watched because of their boredom in the developing town. The girls started to exhibit strange behaviors and claimed that they were being touched and pinched by witches. They became famous, in a sense, as the people thought they could identify who was a witch, as they acted strangely when in the presence of an accused witch.

A crucible is a tool used to smelt metals. When the material has started to boil, any impurities would rise to the top which then can be scooped out. The title of the play is called "The Crucible" which corresponds to the purpose of a crucible, to heat everything up until the impurities are revealed and can be removed. During the Salem witch trials, it is similar as they pressured everyone until the so called "impurities" rise up, the witches, and can be removed.

When a witch was accused, there were many ways that the people thought would prove a witch's guilt. Most popular was the witch's teat, a 3rd nipple that was supposed to be used to suckle the devil. The method depicted in the image was called "swimming" where a witch was dropped into water to see if they would sink or float. Aside from all these methods, 4 girls who were believed to sense who was a witch would do strange actions when a witch was with them.
