Poe's great loves had a tremendous influence on his writing. After returning home from university, he found out that his childhood sweetheart, Sarah Elmira Royster Shelton, was engaged to another man. Heartbroken, he returned to Baltimore 2 years later and moved in with his relatives. There he met his 13-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm, who quickly became his greatest passion. They were married on September 22, 1835. Their marriage proved to be cheerful, but money was always scarce. At the age of 24, Virginia died of tuberculosis. Her death left Poe depressed and unable to write for months. Due to this, critics assumed he couldn't last for much longer. They were right and two years later he died.
