Nine black students were going to integrate into an all-white school for the first time. This was obviously met with great distain. The Little Rock Nine faced great racism and discrimination. One member was able to graduate, and out of the other eight, only two two or three returned the next year. This big movement resulted in schools being shut down in Little Rock, resulting in the Lost Year.  

White students were able to attend private institutions, but for black students, many were not able to continue on. Many joined the military as they could not attend any schools. This still showed the great inequality between white and black students, and the opportunities each group of students had. We see still see a great disparity today. We are in the middle of modern day segregation within our schools.
