One of my favorite Quranic verses is Surah Az-Zumar (39:53):

قُلْ يَـٰعِبَادِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

"Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

adab

*refers to good manners, etiquette, and moral conduct in daily life.

*It includes being respectful, kind, humble, and considerate towards others.

*Adab is a practical way of demonstrating one’s faith through actions, not just words.

*For example, speaking gently, showing gratitude, respecting parents, and treating others fairly are part of adab.

Knowledge (Ilm)

*in Islam holds a very high status.

*It is seen as a way to understand Allah, improve oneself, and benefit society.

*Seeking knowledge is considered an act of worship, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim" (Sunan Ibn Majah).

*Knowledge in Islam includes both religious knowledge (like understanding the Quran and Sunnah) and worldly knowledge (like science and skills) that benefit humanity.

Conclusion:

~adab is about applying good behavior in life, and knowledge is the foundation that helps guide that behavior.

*Iman (Faith)

*Iman (faith) in Islam is the unwavering belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His prophets, the Day of Judgment, and divine destiny (both good and bad). It is the foundation of a Muslim’s life, combining belief in the heart, declaration by the tongue, and actions through deeds.

Iman grows through worship, seeking knowledge, good deeds, and avoiding sin. It is essential for attaining Allah’s pleasure and success in this life and the Hereafter.

#Ihsan (Excellence)

Ihsan in Islam means "excellence" or "perfection" in worship, actions, and character. It is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and even though you cannot see Him, to know that He sees you. This deep awareness of Allah shapes how a Muslim lives, ensuring sincerity, humility, and mindfulness in everything they do

The 6 Pillars of Faith (Iman) in Islam are the core beliefs that every Muslim must hold. They are:

1. Belief in Allah:
   Believing in the oneness of Allah, His existence, and His attributes, with no partners or equals.

2. Belief in the Angels:
   Believing in the angels created by Allah, who carry out His commands (e.g., Jibreel/Gabriel).

3. Belief in the Books of Allah:
   Believing in the divine scriptures revealed to the prophets, including the Quran, Torah, Gospel, Psalms, and others in their original form.

4. Belief in the Prophets and Messengers:
   Believing in all the prophets sent by Allah, from Adam to Muhammad (peace be upon them all), with Prophet Muhammad being the final messenger.

Akhlak

*Akhlak in Islam means good morals, ethics, and behavior.

*Having good akhlak means being kind, honest, humble, patient, and respectful.

*The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The best among you are those who have the best manners and character" (Bukhari).

Belief in Messenger

*Allah’s Chosen Messengers: Messengers were chosen by Allah and given special guidance to lead their people.

1. Equality of Prophets: Muslims believe in all prophets sent by Allah, including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all). Prophet Muhammad is the final messenger.

2. Message of Tawhid: All messengers preached the same core message—belief in the oneness of Allah (Tawhid).

Belief in the messengers reminds Muslims to follow their teachings and live according to Allah’s guidance.

Belief in Hereafter

*Heaven and Hell:

• Heaven (Jannah) is a place of eternal bliss for those who followed Allah's guidance and lived righteously.

• Hell (Jahannam) is a place of punishment for those who disbelieved or committed grave wrongdoings without repentance.

• Final Judgment: On the Day of Judgment, every individual will be judged fairly, and their eternal destination will be determined.

-It derives from the root word : أدب - to refine, to educate, to discipline

-It denotes a habit, an etiquette, a manner of conduct, a custom, refinement, good breeding, good manners, social graces, decorum etc.

-Adab refers to good manners, morals, and appropriate actions derived from the teachings and instructions of Islam.

-Adab is not just a quality – it is also a process. it is something that can be learnt and established.

Adab vs Akhlak

-Akhlāq (morality) and adab (manners) are two frequently used terms to denote ethics.

-Akhlāq is a moral philosophy, while adab is its actual practice.

-Adab “addresses what is the proper, or improper, behavior of man, while the first (akhlāq) addresses why such actions are proper or otherwise (Hashi, 2011, p. 122)” .

• Allah commands us to obey our parents as long as they do not ask us to disobey Him.

• Quran (17:23):
  “And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment...”

• Always listen to them and follow their instructions with respect

2. Speaking to Them with Kindness

• Never shout, argue, or use harsh words.

• Quran (17:23-24):
  “...Do not even say ‘uff’ to them, nor rebuke them, but speak to them in a noble word.”

• Talk softly, politely, and with love.

4. Making Dua for Them

• Always pray for their well-being, guidance, and forgiveness.

• Quran (17:24):
  “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.”

• Dua for parents:
  اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ وَارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا
  (O Allah, forgive me and my parents, and have mercy on them as they raised me when I was young.)

5. Being Patient & Tolerant

• Parents may sometimes get upset, but always remain patient.

• Even if they scold you, never respond with anger

Parents are a blessing from Allah. Value them before it’s too late.

1. With Allah:
   Akhlak involves worshiping Allah with sincerity, showing gratitude, and maintaining a strong connection with Him through prayer and obedience.

2. With Parents:
   Islam teaches deep respect, kindness, and care for parents. The Quran emphasizes honoring and serving them, especially in their old age.

3. With Teachers:
   Respecting teachers is important in Islam as they are seen as guides to knowledge. Good akhlak involves showing gratitude, listening attentively, and following their advice.

4. With Friends:
   Islam encourages being loyal, kind, and supportive to friends. Good akhlak with friends includes being honest, helpful, and avoiding backbiting or causing harm.
