The 1980's - A time in which the Cold War was finally ending and a better tomorrow was just around the corner. The Cold War was dragging its heels, dying out and coming to an end. Reagan was doing his best to conclude this long running arms race that lasted 45 years too long. "Mr. Gorbachev, Tear Down this Wall!” became one of the most famous quotes of the time when Reagan visited Berlin and spoke out against the Soviet Union. It wasn't long before 1989 rolled around and the Berlin Wall was finally broken down - reuniting loved ones and friends that had been separated for years.

In 1985, a group most famously known as MOVE made it's way into the town of Philadelphia and started what may just be considered one of the first terroristic attacks. The group had bought out a row house causing the neighboring houses to complain about MOVE broadcasting political messages at all hours of the day. It wasn't long before the police showed up with an arrest warrant against the group to try and put an end to what they were doing. This resulted in an all out battle with MOVE firing at the police force from on top of the row house. The police commissioner at the time was ordered to have the compound bombed in hopes to stop the group from firing. Two one-pound bombs were dropped onto the building causing a fire to spread - destroying 65 nearby houses and killing eleven people. One of the members of MOVE that survived this day stated that the police were firing at them when they were trying to escape the flames.
The 1980's - A time

Let’s take a trip to the past using
our flux capacitor, DeLorean and jumping Giggawatts. The 1980’s- an era of social
change, easy standard living, and new and exciting changes in technology and
the media. It was carried on the back of the eight-year Ronald Reagan
presidency. Many turn points in the United States, Eastern Europe, and the
Middle East caused political rest and unrest. Economically, the early 1980’s
was plagued with a bad recession, but soon after pulled out. In fact, Reagan
had promised to make an economic revival by the creative name of “Reaganomics.”
The first lady’s War against Drugs made a big move on middle schools, coining
the term “Just Say No [to drugs].” Public Safety Announcements, or PSA’s, would
now appear frequently on television featuring role models like G.I. Joe. It was
very positive, after all, “I don’t
believe in the no-win scenario.”

The 1980’s was a witness to the end
of the Cold War. Communism had ended in Eastern Europe. The United States would
notice a rise of unrest and trouble brewing in Iran and Afghanistan. Meanwhile
in the Middle East, with the Iran Hostage crisis, where fifty-two American
diplomats and citizens were taken as hostage for over a year. But surely there
was more to this decade than third-world destruction? Yes, in fact! “And don’t call be Shirley.”

The 1980’s was not only very
political, but very social. Yuppies replaced the “hippies” of the 1960’s for
youths and became more like modern-day hipsters. It contained a severe rise of
pop culture that spawned from new ideas from the 1970’s. Pop culture exploded,
with Cabbage Patch kids, MTV, Star Wars, Nickelodeon, ESPN, computers, and
Terminators. Stars like Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Boy George became the icons
of the decade. Everything from Walkmans to VCR’s to Projector TV’s and A-Tracks
made everyday life more enjoyable. And “Say
hello to my little friend-“ the home computer, (made by Apple). It was
introduced in 1977, but made financing quick and word-processing easy. They
made business technologically able and efficient. “Inconceivable!”

To live in the 1980’s meant living
in what most people considered the ‘Good Old Days.’ Not all of humanity has “Been Terminated” from its influence. Many
parents of today still hold relics and memories from this era, like
motorcycles, VCR’s, cassettes, and refrigerators. Movies spawned from the 1980’s
are still enjoyed today, like Aliens, E.T., Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller, and
Raiders of the Lost Ark. Recently, people reawaked Back to the Future 2 when
the famous hoverboard competition that was predicted came around in October of
2015. Modern shows like The Goldbergs celebrate pop culture movements from the
80’s. It’s hard to deny that the 1980’s was some Risky Business, so go out there and watch some movies for old time’s
sake. From the wise words of Ferris Bueller: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a
while, you could miss it.”

On January 28th, 1986, the American shuttle orbiter Challenger essentially deteriorated and exploded 73 seconds after liftoff. It ended the spacecraft's 10th mission and the lives of all seven astronauts and a New Hampshire teacher, Christa McAuliffe, were ended. The point of the mission was to show how regular people can act and communicate in space, and Christa was to teach children school lessons from space. The tragedy was devastating and all over media- NASA was prompted to suspend all shuttle missions for the time being. At the time, the effects were very much like what people think of 9/11, people still remember exactly when and where they were during the disaster.

-Meredith
