My Grandma (or as I call her, Halmoni) is from South Korea and shares that culture with me through genetics, history, and food. This part of me is important because it's one of the first things that I share with people. I love this part of my culture. My South Korean culture contributes to my perception of the world by showing me more than where I currently reside. When I talk to my Halmoni I am introduced to a new language, new manners, new food, new people, and a new way of living that I don't see when I am with my American relatives.

Being queer is so important to me because it was something that I felt I should hide when I was younger. It was something I was really embarrassed about and I hoped no one would ever find out. Now that I can accept that part of myself I feel more at peace with myself. Being queer changes my perspective because I'm hyper aware of hate towards the LGBT community and I love more fiercely. I value my relationships more and I preach love instead of anger because I have seen what anger has done to my LGBT peers.

Being a woman doesn't always seem important to me but it's still a culture that I belong to and it's a big part of who I am even though I don't always notice. Being a woman has opened my eyes to a lot of discrimination against my sisters. I vouch for women's rights and believe in equality. I work harder to be apart of groups that are mostly dominated by men. I embrace my femininity with makeup and courage.

I have major depressive disorder, general anxiety, post traumatic stress disorder, and symptoms of borderline personality disorder (I cannot be properly diagnosed until I turn 18). This part of my identity is something that I am sad about but it's a big part of who I am. I battle with my illness daily and it's something I have to overcome constantly. I am kinder because of this. I try not to act out of malice or use words to harm others because I am extremely empathetic. I see people in more than one shade. I try to be patient and give the benefit of the doubt whenever I can.

Being black is something that is important to me because it's something that I'm proud of. I'm proud of my ancestry but it's something that I struggle with. Sometimes it's not easy to be black in America and sometimes I feel discriminated against. Because I am not full black sometimes I don't feel accepted by my family or by other people in my culture but since I am not white I don't feel accepted by this country. Being mixed race gives me a unique perspective where I can be a calm middle and make my own opinion on issues with more than just one point of view.
