Growing up Pi was a very religious boy, and because of that, he grew up a strict vegetarian. This strict vegetarian lifestyle led Pi to fear animals but more specifically the carnivorous side of them: “I don't know if I saw blood before turning into Mother's arms... But I heard. It was enough to scare the living vegetarian daylights out of me"(36). As Pi is drifting alone at sea, riding along the waves(participle), with Richard Parker as his companion, his vegetarian morals are conflicted due to hunger, thus, Pi adapts by turning into what he once feared; a carnivorous being who now acts closer to Richard Parker, a Bengal tiger, then his old self. Pi realizes this change in himself as he says, "I noticed, with a pinching of the heart, that I ate like an animal, that this noisy, frantic, unchewing wolfing-down of mine was exactly the way Richard Parker ate"(225). Pi Patel needed to cross the line between what makes someone a human and the line that makes an animal in order to survive.
