I am currently a kindergarten teacher and I loved the idea of having students have penpals that they would share different experiences with. I think this would help student develop a personal connection and get a better understanding of diversity and different perspectives. I would even have my students video chat as a whole class.

To do this: I would...
-Not be able to do this on my own.
-Collaborate with my grade team as well as teachers around the school to see who has access/connections with schools around the world.
-This would be a short-term strategy that students will do during the 6weeks of their unit. However parents and students will have the choice to continue to stay in connect with penpals after the fact. (They can reach out to penpals once a month)
-Check-In with students to see if this strategy is working by having them do a share with the class about something they've learned about their penpals culture background, journal reflections, venn diagrams to compare their culture and their penpals, etc.

- Languages: Adding elective courses to teach students a new language that students would be interested to learn. This change will require questionnaires to be submitted to gain data on the project. This plan will need the PYP Coordinator as well as the administrative committee to create this opportunity. We need to study the feasibility of such classes as well as finding suitable instructors to be in charge of the class. Cost should also be kept in light of the students who are joining. This is a long-term strategy that will show its success when we have students interested and willing to encourage others to participate and sharing their knowledge with others in class.

- Pen-Pals: Some teachers talk about meeting other teachers through workshops and the same could be offered to the students. International Schools around the world offer such a wonderful opportunity to having international friends. They can send letters, emails or video chats depending on what the student is comfortable with. This is a long-term strategy as will need the collaboration to occur between the PYP Coordinators, Homeroom Teacher and PRM (parent relations manager) of both schools to ensure complete transparency with both schools. This will succeed when students share about their pen pals’ experiences.

A lot of teachers here mentioned International Day. I love it too. On that day, all parents, students and teachers are encouraged to wear their costumes which could represent their ethnics and countries. Food and drinks are shared, all kinds of music from all over the world are played. It is a great idea to embed the international mindedness!
2. In our school, teachers are encouraged to decorate each corner a country around the world. I think diversity is also a good way to embed the international mindedness..

I am really interested in connecting two ideas I came across to my music classes.

The first is the idea of a direct exchange with students in another country. Through my Orff training, I met music teachers from all over the world. I'm wondering if there would be a way to connect via Skype with one of my friends, and have their students teach my students a song in their language over the internet. Then, my students could do the same. After reaching out to some Orff friends to see who might be interested, I would need to collaborate with our Tech director to figure out how to make the experience visually satisfying for the students. If successful, I would love it to be something I could repeat with students in different countries!

I also love the idea of an international fair, but with songs instead of food. Maybe we could have a day, or a week, where parents or guardians come in to music class to share a song from their culture with the class. If it was a "fair", maybe the parent or guardian could actually teach the song to not only the students but staff and other parents! I would need to collaborate with the administration to work out details, communication and space.

Individual short- term plans:
1.Touching different cultures by asking the kids to talk about their culture or their favorite subjects whenever the subject of our lesson lets us do so.
2. Inviting other schools according to the events. ( e.g. we invited French school to our school to empathize with them for the fire-damaged Cathedral, kids wrote letters and made nice wishes and gave their letters to french kids.)
Individual long-term plans:
1. “star student of the week”
We randomly pick a student every week to become the star student for a whole week. This is a very interesting activity and kids enjoy it a lot. We do seven activities for seven days. For instance, on the first day we ask the kid to bring pictures of him/her and the whole family and introduce him/herself to other kids. We put the pictures on the wall, and keep them for the whole week. The star student wears a crown and talks about his/her favorite things (color, book, animal, etc.). He/she gets more responsibilities for that week, too. On one day they bring their favorite book to school and read it to others, or on another day they bring a dish of their traditional food to the class. I’m proud to say that by the end of this activity I was impressed how kids changed their attitudes towards the whole school and the new environment since they felt they are a member of this community, they can have a voice, they are seen, and no matter how they are different and where they come from they can have commonalities with other members and being appreciated and accepted by them.
2. "world Map" : touching on different countries and cultures through out the year
3. "International Day Event"
picking a country and working on all aspects of it during the year : food, symbols, language, culture, traditions, celebrations, nature, etc.
Collaborative short-term plans:
1. PE teacher: working on the traditional games of the kids' countries.
2. Music teacher: introducing special instruments, songs and dances.
3. Parents: Asking them to get in touch with each other and try to plan for fun activities after school time, like setting play dates at each other’s homes, going shopping together, etc.
4. Whole school: celebrating International day event

I can make it alone if it is a small version of it, in my class. For exemple with french language, this idea with some countries that speak french - some in europe, some in africa, some in america or even french territory from all over the world.
If i want it to be a school celebration, i wouln't be able to do it alone and would coordinate with my collegue.
2. if it's in class, with the student -and maybe some other teacher if they are willing to.
If it's in the school, definitly some teachers, the kitchen, the admnistration and the students ..
3. It can be a short term strategy in the meaning it can be one big exhibition day that shows an explosion of color, or it can be dispread during the school year with few exemple a month.

4 . there is some feedback that won't lie :
If people are happy -the team, the students, the parents.
If the student maybe reuse some fact in some classes, in some thought, show compassion etc...

So we have the language advantage to promote culture through language teaching and embed international mindedness.
What I did in my classroom is:
1. Celebrate our similarities and difference first. We did this after winter break when we had so much snow. We made snowmen, then talked about how each of our snowmen looked different and similar. Just like each of snowflake is different, each of us is unique. Then we made a "me" book to explore our difference. This way prepared my students to know we all are different in some ways.
2. Celebrate Mexico holidays and Chinese holidays. This requires team work. I lead the Chinese holidays celebration, while other Spanish first grade teachers lead Mexico holiday celebrations.
3. Invite the parents or other guests to come to the classroom to share their experiences. I had one mom coming over to read stories in Spanish and teach us salsa dance. She even brought some Mexican food for the students to try.
4. Have my students teach us something. I have one girl whose grandma is from Greek, she taught us Greek dance that her grandma taught her. Other students brought something from different parts of the world to show and tell.
In all, my experience is to bring the world community into our classroom to help our students international-mindedness.

As we all know that the international Mindedness is a view of the world in which people see themselves connected to the global community and assume a sense of responsibility to its members. My plan to encourage international-mindedness in my school. First through the homeroom teachers in their story time they start reading stories with the students about different cultures start an open discussion of our similarities and differences, seeking their curiosity about the world around us and about how to help others. Second Prepare for an international day where again each class will represent a different culture with their costumes and food and invite them all to share it together Prepare for costume parade where each class or group will sing a song representing this culture with it's languages putting into consideration that each group should search for all the needed information themselves. As a conclusion Students will have enough time to discuss together and ask each other questions about the countries they are representing and gather all the knowledge and information they are eager to know. As for making this alone no it will be a group work where all the stage teachers working together in harmony. I believe it can be a long term strategy if the activities and information we are seeking are renewed all the time. Ill know its working first from the students themselves whether they are enjoying what they are doing or not their feed back about the gathered information and the parents feedback themselves.

Through the day we included different activities such as picking a flag from a different country of their fellow class mates to create. At the end the children where allowed time to ask questions to their classmates at their cultural backgrounds. This allowed the students to allow for open-mindedness. Please find attached a class photo taken from the children on international day.

As a Thai language teacher at an International School, it is possible for me to use the ideas suggested to develop international mindedness. I can work with the PYP Homeroom teachers to develop our classroom library to include diversity within book - and the Siam Book Awards is a great place for us to start to get suggestions for titles - as it includes authors from various cultures, and also characters and story lines that address diverse perspectives. I think, with the PYP Homeroom teacher, it is also possible for us to collaborate to develop virtual penpals with another international school - this will help us develop the ATL skills - not just through reading and writing but with media literacy too. As we connect to another school and other students, we can co-inquire and also possibly engage in Action together where we can serve the local or global community based on the context. This will require collaboration with the Homeroom teachers and Specialist teachers in my school as well as the teachers in the corresponding school. It would be ideal if we could develop the planners together - virtually as logistics would allow. Then, we can also reflect on the learning, interaction, and planners together as we develop formative assessment. This would not only develop international mindedness in students, but also build our professional connections globally within an authentic context.

Hello, everyone! Here is my advice for Ms. Toni’s class.

For children who struggle with reading, opening a book or reading in front of their peers in class can be an incredibly daunting experience.

Reading confidence matters. Developing reading proficiency is essential for achieving overall success in school, and children who shy away from reading are likely to encounter even greater obstacles in the future.

To nurture a child's self‑esteem it's important for teachers to be patient and encouraging. Here are some simple ways to boost your student's reading confidence and put them on the right path towards a lifelong love of reading. First is appreciate their efforts in reading.Second, let them choice what book they want to read,Third Challenge your child every now and then is great, but if your child wants to read the same book for the twentieth time, allow it. Let them feel proud about reading a book from cover to cover without needing your help. This is important for building their confidence.Lastly , No matter what level your child is at, remind yourself how far they've come, even if they've made relatively small progress. Praise constantly. It will encourage them to keep improving. How to develop international-mindedness, based in our practices in our school we ask people ( teacher , students and other professiona)l to share their cultures, expertise and many more to our kids and to develop understand of each diversity. Our students are free to ask questions and also share their knowledge.

These are some suggestions I can give but there lot of approach or strategies to child. I know someone in this who could give more ideas.

Thanks ❤️

In school we can follow some of the following strategies to embed international-mindedness in our students. These strategies could be followed by the learning community to ensure the same.· Celebrating International Food Day – this celebration would be a like a fun-fair wherein children can bring enjoy international cuisines and learn about the food choices of the global community.

Culture Day – This would be yet another learning engagement for the children to represent their own culture, they can come dressed in their local attire and speak about their culture or perhaps do a dance or sing, whichever form they want to communicate about their culture and children will learn about the global community.
Story Time – This could be another very interesting strategy to embed international-mindedness in children. School could arrange parents to come and read in their own language and then translate the same to the students or could read them stories about different settings.

I would like to talk about myself in terms of joining an IB school. My first day of school was a Chinese new year. Everyone was suppose to wear red. I was lost out since i was wearing white but yet I felt welcomed. The whole school was in red and it was colourful and lovely.
During the ceremony I saw different ways they danced a long with their music. It was indeed fun to watch and i even learnt how to say ''Hello'' in Chinese (NI HAO). I tried some of their food in was indeed spicy but loved it. So with my experience I would this how I would embed international mindedness in my class-
1.I would first welcome my student and introduce myself to them since its a new semester then I will give them the opportunity to also introduce themselves to each other talking about where they are from ( country), their culture
( food, cloths and how they dress) and some exciting place found in their country if possible.
2.Students will draw and we will paste on the walls to show our different cultures. After the pasting we will go round and read about each others culture and later the student will share with us what he or she learnt from a new culture.
3. I would also get books ( non fiction) from different cultures from the library or any reading app and share with my students.
4. I would also invite any parent who would love to share about their culture and also possible get a few things ( cloths ,drums for their music and more ) for kids to touch and feel how it is.
5. I would also explain to the students how important every culture is and how to respect each others culture . I will also show videos on how people embrace other people culture and how beautiful it is.
6.I will then give the students the chance to say what they feel about other people culture and how and which one they would like to have an experience with.

Siba Karman, Embedding international-mindedness. My school is a language immersion school. We have English, Turkish, Kurdish, and Arabic languages and this will allow students to read and listen about other cultures, beliefs, traditions, and even everyday life experiences and embed international-mindedness. Morning greetings: to reinforce international mindedness and spread a comfortable environment in the class. Invite people from different countries: It helps me as a teacher to invite parents and sometimes teachers from different grade levels as guest speakers to read stories in their own language, and talk about their cultures, traditions, foods, and special occasions they celebrate. Weekly Assembly with the assistance of specialist teachers like PE, Art, and Music teachers. In music, learning songs in different languages and performing them in the concert hall in front of PYP students is also another way to become open-minded. As we know music is an international language and it can bring together all different types of cultures.in Art, viewing artwork from different cultures. In PE children could learn about different sports that are popular in their cultures or they could learn dances from around the world. Pen pal Involve students in exchange programs or pen-pal experiences. This will let them exchange thoughts and life experiences on a personal and global level. Here are my suggestions to apply international-mindedness in the classroom and at school•	Can you make this change alone?•	No, it is always better to interact with the school community and partner community.•	Who might you need to collaborate with?•	I need to collaborate with the coordinator, grade level team, specialist teachers, TAs, and parents.•	Is this a short-term strategy or a long-term strategy?•	It is a long-term strategy where these special day, visits should keep happening in rotation, so children look forward to them.•	How will you know it is working?•	Feedback from the teachers at school and from parents

1. Culture day. This a long term strategy in collaboration with the school to allow learners to show case different cultures from different countries through dressing code.
2. Use of leaner profiles. Reinforcing learner profile everyday will contribute a lot in embedding international mindedness as leaners will inquire, they will be knowledgeable and open minded on culture and diversity
3. The instruction Language: this is a short term strategy Considering that English is one of the instructional language this will lead to questions like
the origin of English language and how many countries use English as language. The discussion together with the teacher will embed international mindedness in a learner
4.. Student project: This a short term strategy. Students will be given a project on countries. Leaners will identify the countries they know together with their flags. In so doing they will be moving their mind from the rural to global world.
5. Language acquisition: language policy of encouraging learners to learn other language. This will be in collaboration with the school. By so doing they will need to understand the culture of the other people. this a long term strategy too
6. Use Research method: Design a lesson that integrate local and international examples. Also choose a country to discuss their culture.

how will l know it is working. i can gauge from my learners when they respect culture diversity and also feed back from parents and school

I will continue promoting importance of mother tongue, through the corner in classroom where children can display in their mother tongue key vocabulary that they would like to teach the rest of classroom.

How is agency supported and nurtured through this workshop?
Agency is supported and nurtured very well in this workshop. The concept of workshop makes us to read and comment each other ideas and experiences, that way we learn a lot from each other. We are given clear instructions. The facilitator provides feedback and keeps positive attitude.

I believe in creating different opportunities for my students to be able to understand other cultures. Here are some ways I would or already have tried to embed international mindedness in my Grade 1 classroom.

1.Multicultural Story time:

Incorporate storybooks and reading materials that showcase diverse cultures, traditions, and perspectives. Discuss these stories, emphasizing similarities and differences among cultures.

2. Celebrating Cultural Festivals:

Acknowledge and celebrate various cultural festivals throughout the year, discussing their significance, traditions, and customs. Encourage students to share their own cultural practices if comfortable.

3. World Map Exploration:I have recently used this to Introduce a world map in the classroom. We used it to discuss different countries, their flags and languages. We highlighted where students and their families are from.

I also gave students the opportunity to design their flag inside the their learner Journal books. Thereafter we took a large paper designed a class flag that represent our Grade 1 class.

4. Arts and Crafts:Engage students in art and craft activities inspired by different cultures. For instance, create Chinese paper lanterns, African tribal masks etc.

5. Music and DanIntroduce music and dance from various cultures. Play songs, teach dances, or use musical instruments common in different parts of the world.

6. Cultural Show-and-Tell: this is the idea we will be using for International day in a few weeks time.

Students to bring in items or artifacts from their cultural backgrounds to share with the class. This could be clothing, traditional instruments, or items related to customs as well as teachers.

7. Language Exploration:Teach basic greetings or simple words in different languages.

Dear Andrea!Teaching open-mindedness and empathy is crucial for fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment. Here are some suggestions:

Lead by Example: Model open-mindedness and empathy in your own interactions with students and colleagues. Show respect for diverse opinions and perspectives.

Encourage Perspective-taking: Encourage students to consider situations from multiple viewpoints. This could involve role-playing exercises, discussing real-life scenarios, or analyzing literature and historical events from different perspectives.

Promote Active Listening: Teach students the importance of truly listening to others without judgment. Practice active listening techniques in the classroom, such as paraphrasing what someone has said to ensure understanding.

Cultivate Critical Thinking: Help students develop the ability to critically evaluate information and viewpoints. Teach them to question assumptions and consider evidence before forming opinions.

Foster Respect for Diversity: Create opportunities for students to learn about different cultures, backgrounds, and experiences. Celebrate diversity through multicultural activities, guest speakers, or literature from various cultures.

Encourage Kindness and Compassion: Incorporate activities that promote kindness and compassion towards others. This could include community service projects, random acts of kindness challenges, or discussions about the importance of empathy.

Address Bias and Stereotypes: Have open discussions about bias, stereotypes, and prejudice. Help students recognize and challenge their own biases, and teach strategies for responding to discrimination and injustice.

Provide Feedback and Reflection Opportunities: Offer feedback on students' behavior and attitudes related to open-mindedness and empathy. Encourage self-reflection through journaling or class discussions about personal growth.

Create a Safe Space: Ensure that your classroom is a safe and supportive environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and sharing their thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment.

Integrate Social and Emotional Learning (SEL): Incorporate SEL curriculum into your teaching to explicitly teach skills such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.

By incorporating these strategies into your teaching practices, you can help your students develop the open-mindedness and empathy they need to thrive in a diverse and interconnected world.

Plan for Embedding International-Mindedness at Kaspi International School

Strategies:

1. Intercultural Activities:

Organize cultural exchange days where students can share their cultural heritage through food, music, and traditional attire.

Incorporate diverse cultural celebrations into the school calendar, such as Lunar New Year, Diwali, and International Day.

2. Language Learning Opportunities:

Offer language classes or cultural workshops to introduce students to new languages and promote cultural understanding.

Facilitate language exchange programs where students can practice conversing with peers from different linguistic backgrounds.

4. Collaborative Projects:

Implement collaborative projects with schools from different countries, fostering cross-cultural understanding and teamwork.

Encourage students to participate in international competitions or virtual exchange programs to broaden their global perspectives.

5. Teachers can collaborate to develop curriculum materials and plan intercultural activities, while school leaders can provide support and resources. Collaboration with community organizations can also enrich students' experiences through cultural immersion opportunities.

Timeline: This plan encompasses both short-term and long-term strategies. Immediate actions, such as organizing cultural exchange days and integrating global perspectives into lessons, can be implemented in the short term. However, building a sustainable culture of international-mindedness requires ongoing efforts and may unfold gradually over several years.

Evaluation: To assess the effectiveness of the plan, regular evaluations and feedback mechanisms will be established. This may include surveys to gauge students' cultural awareness, observation of intercultural interactions, and analysis of academic performance in globally themed subjects. Additionally, tracking participation in international initiatives and student engagement in cultural activities can provide indicators of success. Collaborative reflection sessions with stakeholders will also offer insights into areas for improvement and adjustment of strategies as needed.

By implementing these strategies, we aim to cultivate a school community that embraces diversity, fosters mutual respect, and prepares students to thrive in an interconnected world.

Sevinj Abdullayeva

Library teacher

Kaspi International School
