Artists such as Katharina Grosse amongst many others have explored the notion of involving the mechanical within the painting process in order to subvert convention. These artists are a great source of inspiration for this work that will explore the mechanical and the faux-expressive. The work will be an exploration on rigging an automatic painting machine and documenting the process. The work will eventuate into a faux-expressive exhibition, by which the audience is perhaps unaware that every work is rendered by an automatic device, with no human intervention. One could hypothesise that it would be difficult to distinguish between a human and automated painting. This raises a lot of conceptual concerns such as, the value of the artists hand and the finished work and the replication of Abstract Expressionist styles by a device devoid of emotion. The challenge will be not only rigging the machine properly but ensuring that it has full autonomy and creates convincing results/paintings.
