It all started in the third grade.  That’s when she realized she was different.  A freak, she says. So she played it off.  It’s just a prank she told them, when they asked what she tried to describe when she believed she wasn’t the only one.  However, as our young protagonist's life progresses, she faces difficulties and challenges alone, blindly because she doesn’t know what she is. However, her eyes being to open as she trusts the people around her.  They’re not mean, they’re not the enemy.  They’re here to help.  That’s how our Mia’s life begins to change.

Wendy Mass does a beautiful job describing the life in the disabled community.  It gives the questions “What would happen to me?” or “This is real?” that readers wonder.  A recommended book for a teen audience, this book gives you the perspective of those different than “normal”.  Unique, special, and memorable, this is a book you won’t want to miss.

This book has deepened my interest in historical biographies.  Recently, I have become more acquainted with the "Historical Fiction" genre.  Picking up this book, I felt that the subject would intrigue me but not so much the biography portion.  However, I was corrected when I realized that while I enjoyed reading the book as well, I could gain more information than if I were to indulge in a fiction.
