Lexia English Language Development

Price: $40 per student license. In my school, there are roughly 20 students eligible for this program.

Item Description: Lexia English is a computer educational program designed to help ELL students in grades K-6 with various literacy skills. The main goal is to improve and support the students' English Language development. The program supports skill development in early literacy (alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, decoding skills), language (grammar, vocabulary, listening, syntax), reading (word study, comprehension, fluency), writing (spelling, sentence construction, planning/revising), and various academic subjects (math, science, social studies, general knowledge) (National Center on Intensive Intervention, n.d.)

Eligibility: The students are eligible based on their New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) results. This test puts students into five major categories. These include entering, emerging, transitioning, expanding, and commanding. Students who test as entering or emerging are eligible for the Lexia program.

How it works: Similarly to iReady, the students take an initial assessment that places them at the appropriate level. Literacy skill lessons are provided for students on their computers/Chromebooks. There is also an option
for printed-out lessons/activities, so the students can practice using graphic organizers or writing in general. Librarians can modify the lessons based on the theme or subject being worked on. This program works similarly to other computer-based English programs like iReady or iRead.

Rationale: This program is an excellent supplement to library instruction, especially in situations (like mine) where the students are seen not only for a regular class but also a coverage class when their general education teacher is in PLC meetings. This would make a perfect center if a school librarian implemented three or four different centers during a class. It is very easy for librarians to track the students' progress due to the easily accessible online data reports. This is extremely helpful in determining what academic areas need to be worked on. The activities and the cartoon characters make the lessons engaging for the students.

Potential disadvantages: One issue that has been noticed is that the accents of the cartoon characters that are supposed to help the students are sometimes very thick and hard to understand. Another issue is that sometimes the microphone does not pick up what the students are saying. Other times the program does not understand what the students are saying based on various speech issues as well

*NOTE*
The ELL teacher at my school (Thomas Buffamante) was interviewed for general information about the Lexia program since he uses it in his reading groups.

It includes games, learning activities, and animated movies. It is designed to assist students in improving their literacy and writing skills.

Price: $18.25 per student license

Item Description: This online product provides stories and reading passages for students. Each story has questions that the students have to answer. The eBooks are bought sorted by levels. For example, level A is grades K-1, level B is grade 2, etc. The eBook has roughly 264-288 pages depending on the level.

Rationale: This product is primarily helpful to improve the student's comprehension and writing skills. At my elementary school, the administration wants me to focus on comprehension, especially considering the importance of the New York State ELA tests that start in grade 3.
