On April 13, an oxygen tank in the service module exploded making Routine Mission AS-508 into a struggle for survival. Swigert contacted NASA saying, “Houston, we’ve had a problem”. The explosion resulted in the loss of both oxygen tanks, simultaneously crippling the spacecraft’s power and life support systems.

Due to the explosion rising levels of CO2 posed a serious threat to the astronaut's health. This led to one of the most famous examples of engineering in space history; the creation of a makeshift CO2 scrubber. Using a plastic bag, a cardboard cover from a flight manual, duct tape and a sock. This helped them survive.

The final descent occurred on April 17 to Earth, there was no communication as the spaceship splashed into the Pacific Ocean. The whole world was happy that Lovell, Swigert and Haise returned to Earth safely, they became heroes after landing. The lesson all three astronauts learned during the stressful time they spent in space were adaptability and the importance of teamwork under pressure. If they did not work together then there would have been a possibility of one of them dying. Apollo 13 made history, not as a catastrophe but as a shining example of human spirit. Apollo 13’s legacy served as a constant reminder of the extraordinary potential that lies within the human spirit when faced with the unknown.

The lessons from Apollo 13’s near disaster were meticulously analyzed, resulting in many changes in spacecraft designs. Scientists wanted to make sure that the oxygen tanks were enhanced to prevent it from exploding on another set of astronauts. The importance of preparation was also improved, astronauts and scientists were encouraged to voice their concerns without fear. The quick thinking of the astronauts and the ground team’s ability to devise innovative.
