This video informed the audience that Dick and Perry were given the death penalty because of their aggressive and evil crime. I learned that Capote built a somewhat intimate relationship with Dick and Perry while he was gathering information for the book and he felt almost sad for them, not that they weren’t getting what they deserved, that they were throwing away their life when they could have had lots of potential. Currently, there is a lot of disagreement surrounding the death penalty so that leads me to wonder, if these crimes were committed more recently, would Dick and Perry’s verdict have been the same or would it have been softer.

This page provides a summary of what occurred, and what was done in response to the murders. (comparable to a police report.) This described what happened in jail when Dick and Perry were cellmates, as well as their motive of why they wanted to kill the Clutters. It's fascinating since they were well aware of everything that might have led to their arrest and managed to escape it. I knew they'd previously been in the jail reform system, but this appeared to be a very sophisticated murder. It included a detailed summary of the killings, which was useful because it was brief and to the point.

Because Dick and Perry were convicted of these crimes it brings the question of why they did it. Was it out of greed, out of jealousy / vengeance, or was it really out the blue? If there truly was no motive to this crime then it seems that there could have been underlying issues with both Dick and Perry. From the book we can presume that Perry has some kind of insecurity (about his knees) that could lead him to overcompensate in the form of murders. You can assume that Dick has taken the dominant role in the friendship and Perry kind of trails behind. You can assume that Perry has some kind of inferiority complex that makes him constantly feel the need to prove himself to Dick.

It describes how these former inmates thought this family had a lot of money, therefore they made a plan to rob them. However, when things don't go according to plan, the 2 men slaughter the family. The report also mentions the men's trials and days leading up to their death, as they were given the death penalty.

This page has text along with an informative video that vivdly demostrates the complexity of what was likely going through Dick and Perry's head. It focuses on the struggles of mental illness and examines not only what they were feeling, but why they were feeling that way. It gave insight that Dick was a sociopath and Perry was a schitzophrenic that would often break from reality and not necessarily know what he was doing. This page provides quotes as well. It states that Perry displays signs of schitzophrenia when her says, "I didnt want to harm the man. I though he was a very nice gentle-man. Soft-spoken. I thought so right up to the moment I cut his throat." This page dismisses any that state they were cold blooded murderers, which yes they were but you must also take into consideration that they were both severly mentally ill.

This page provudes many examples and quotes of when these mental illnesses are displayed through Dick and Perry. With the quote used previously you can really see the internal conflict that Perry felt and that when a schitzophrenic breaks from reality which happens often, they have little awareness of right and wrong. In an interview with Capote, he displays sympathy for Dick and Perry because he spent many years with these men and he often implied he viewed them as nothing more then troubled young men. This source has the same type of tone, while it is very sophisticated when describing the illnesses, it is also easy to understand.
